A Note From the Headmaster

Greetings Parents,

I believe the start of our school year has been great. I see students energetic, smiling, and engaged in class. Students share with me their joy regarding classes, teachers, peers, and extra-curricular activities, the House System, attending sporting events, and the list continues. However, your perspective as a parent is vital. I want and need feedback on your son or daughter’s experience in the classroom and with his or her teachers. To that end, Great Hearts will be sending out a family survey in the coming week or so. This “pulse” survey should take about five minutes to complete, and as a “pulse” survey, it gives me a snapshot of your perspective after the first five weeks of school. I need to know what we are doing well as a school, what changes I have made as the leader that have had a positive or negative impact on our community, and where we can improve. There is a comment section that is optional; most parents do not comment, but I ask you to consider taking more time to share details and specifics. Only then, can I know how best to lead my teachers and love our students. Feel free to reach out to me directly to meet, so you can share your thoughts and feelings with me. I want to make sure we are providing the most meaningful experience for our students.

Have a great weekend,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Phones may only be used during the event to contact parents, if needed. Students may wear comfortable clothing (including pajamas). Clothing must be “Glendale Prep appropriate”. This means:

Homework Load
The Middle School homework load on average should be 1 hour and 40 minutes each night. The designated time is 20 minutes per night for Math and Literature/Composition and 15 minutes for every other class.

The High School homework load on average should be 2 hours each night. The designated time is 40 minutes per night for Humane Letters and 20 minutes for every other class.

Please reach out to teachers if you have questions or concerns regarding the homework load; please copy Ms. Wegener, our Dean of Academics, on the email as well at kwegener@glendaleprep.org.

Quarter 1 Deficiency Notices
Quarter 1 Deficiencies were sent out this week via email. GP teachers take the time to detail areas of concern and specific areas needing improvement. If your student received a Deficiency Notice, please sign and return the notice with your student. Teachers are always available to help students during tutoring hours. View the tutoring schedule here.

Autism Research & Resource
This year, Archway Glendale and Glendale Prep will be working with the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) on a project regarding a universal screening for social challenges at public schools. The idea is that screening children for social challenges early and identifying and addressing those challenges will have a significant positive effect on their school experience. We plan to take a role in the research that SARRC is doing in this area this year with our 8th grade students. You are also invited to a Q&A session with Mr. Navarrette, Great Hearts’ Director of Exceptional Student Services, and a representative from SARRC regarding the project. At this session, you will hear more about the work that SARRC and Great Hearts have already done and plans for the project in the future. The Q&A session is scheduled for Thursday, October 3, at 6:00 p.m. in the Archway Multipurpose Room. We look forward to seeing you there!
