A Note From the Headmaster

Happy Friday Parents,

Next week is Spirit Week! This is a wonderful opportunity for students to show their school spirit in a variety of ways. The week culminates with our homecoming game on Friday, followed by the high school homecoming dance. We would love to see as many families in our community come out and cheer on our Varsity Lady Griffins volleyball team on Thursday, at 6:00 p.m. On Friday, please come and join families and alumni as our Varsity football team takes on Camp Verde. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. If you have not heard yet, our cross-country team competed in California this past weekend and did quite well. One team won their heat, and when talking with one runner in the hall, I learned he shaved eight minutes off his previous time.

I am reminded daily how important extracurricular activities are to the formation of our children.

Thank you for not only choosing GP as a means of education, but also in sacrificing your time and money to allow your son or daughter to compete for our school, to form lasting friendships, and learn what it is to be part of something greater than themselves. Please make sure to thank all the coaches when you see them. They are so wonderful and are committed to upholding virtue beyond the classroom.

Hope to see you all at the game next Friday; don’t forget to bring a seat!

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conference sign-ups were sent via email last week. Conferences are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. We have worked diligently to create a conference schedule that allows for all of our teachers’ class schedules. Please do not send requests for conferences via email. If you did not receive a sign-up email, please reach out to Mrs. Hayakawa at shayakawa@glendaleprep.org right away.

At least one parent/guardian of each student is expected to attend parent-teacher conferences. All conferences will be fifteen minutes long. The format will be a round-table discussion including the parent and a panel of the student’s teachers.

  • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students do not attend conferences but will complete a middle school self-assessment in response to questions provided in the evaluation. Parents will bring the self-assessment to the conference.
  • 9th-12th grade students are required to attend and lead their conference. Conversation will be based on a high school self-assessment written in response to questions in the evaluation. Students will bring the self-assessment to the conference.
  • *Students attending conferences must be in uniform.

Independent Study Week
All middle school students will read a different book depending upon their grade level. Middle School (6th-8th Grade) Independent Study Week books were included in the Classics to Keep list that students were asked to purchase at the beginning of the school year. If your Middle Schooler does not own a copy yet, the title and ISBN is provided below. If any books are on backorder, please reach out to Ms. Wegener at kwegener@glendaleprep.org.

6th Grade Lit/Comp: The Magician’s Nephew, ISBN: 978-0064471107

All high school students will read the same book in preparation for the High School Symposium. High School (9th-12th Grade) Independent Study Week books can be purchased on the GP Payment Portal while supplies last. Reserve your High School Independent Study Week book here. The last day to reserve your book through the payment portal will be Tuesday, October 8th. All books will be placed in student lockers by Thursday, October 10th. College Counseling
SENIOR PARENTS and STUDENTS: FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1st from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the Archway Multipurpose Room. All senior students and parents should plan to attend. You should have received an email earlier this week outlining what items are necessary to bring with you in order to complete the application. If you missed the email notification, please see the College Counseling page on the school website for a list of items.

Save the Date! Thursday, October 24th Glendale Prep is hosting multiple college rep visits during the morning hours. Check the website for which colleges and universities will be attending. We are requesting all sophomore, junior and senior students interested in a four-year college plan on attending.

Be sure to check the College Counseling page on Glendale Prep website and the CC bulletin board for upcoming college fairs and college rep visits.

Water Bottles
Previously, the front office has been holding lost water bottles, as they are of significant value, but in recent weeks, there has been too many to manage. Please note that all water bottles will remain in the Lost and Found cart (located in the courtyard) for one week; thereafter, they will be donated. The school recommends that your student has their name clearly labeled, not just marked with stickers, and without a name, your child may be at risk of losing a water bottle of value.

Autism Research & Resource
This year, Archway Glendale and Glendale Prep will be working with the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) on a project regarding a universal screening for social challenges at public schools. The idea is that screening children for social challenges early and identifying and addressing those challenges will have a significant positive effect on their school experience. We plan to take a role in the research that SARRC is doing in this area this year with our 8th grade students. You are also invited to a Q&A session with Mr. Navarrette, Great Hearts’ Director of Exceptional Student Services, and a representative from SARRC regarding the project. At this session, you will hear more about the work that SARRC and Great Hearts have already done and plans for the project in the future. The Q&A session is scheduled for Thursday, October 3, at 6:00 p.m. in the Archway Multipurpose Room. We look forward to seeing you there!
