A Note From the Headmaster

Greetings Parents,

This Monday, every Great Hearts teacher, administrator, network-level employee, and support staff met at various campuses for the Annual Summit. We were reminded by President Erik Twist that what we believe and care about as a network of schools is truly revolutionary- we believe there is universal truth which can be known by every human; that every human can come to appreciate an objective beauty, and that our mission extends beyond academics to forming souls to be good. He affirmed multiple times that our work will have eternal consequences; I wholeheartedly agree! Mrs. Washburn, a former Glendale Prep teacher and now Headmaster of Veritas Prep, gave a speech regarding the beauty of the calling of a teacher. The event was inspiring, and I found myself rejuvenated in my calling as the leader of our school. I was humbled considering how many good people work in our network; the best, of course, serving your son or daughter in our GP community. My favorite part of the Summit was the seminar we shared together. I remember a moment listening to the discussion and realizing that so many different people, from different schools, with different personalities, and from different backgrounds came together to do something that was truly beautiful and inclusive; something that united us all for one hour- we discussed a poem. I would like to share that poem with you.

Those Winter Sundays
BY ROBERT HAYDEN
Sundays too my father got up early
and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,
then with cracked hands that ached
from labor in the weekday weather made
banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.

I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.
When the rooms were warm, he’d call,
and slowly I would rise and dress,
fearing the chronic angers of that house,

Speaking indifferently to him,
who had driven out the cold
and polished my good shoes as well.
What did I know, what did I know
of love’s austere and lonely offices?

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conference sign-ups were sent via email last week. Conferences are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. We have worked diligently to create a conference schedule that allows for all of our teachers’ class schedules. Please do not send requests for conferences via email. If you did not receive a sign-up email, please reach out to Mrs. Hayakawa at shayakawa@glendaleprep.org right away.

At least one parent/guardian of each student is expected to attend parent-teacher conferences. All conferences will be fifteen minutes long. The format will be a round-table discussion including the parent and a panel of the student’s teachers.

  • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students do not attend conferences but will complete a self-assessment in response to questions provided in the evaluation. Parents will bring the self-assessment to the conference.
  • 9th-12th grade students are required to attend and lead their conference. Conversation will be based on a self-assessment written in response to questions in the evaluation.  Students will bring the self-assessment to the conference.
  • *Students attending conferences must be in uniform.

It is necessary to complete the FAFSA to obtain need-based financial aid for college. All senior students and parents should plan to attend. Please check your email for specific documents needed to complete the application.

Save the Date! Thursday, October 24th Glendale Prep is hosting multiple college rep visits during the morning hours. Check the website for which colleges and universities will be attending. We are requesting all sophomore, junior and senior students interested in a four-year college plan on attending.

Be sure to check the College Counseling page on Glendale Prep website and the CC bulletin board for upcoming college fairs and college rep visits.

The Extra-Curricular Non-Athletics “ECNA” schedule is now available and can be viewed on the Glendale Prep website. In order to join an ECNA, students can simply attend at the time and location noted, and talk to the ECNA leader. After their second attendance, if they wish to continue, the fee must be paid on the Payment Portal. Students can be a member of more than one ECNA, as long as the times do not conflict. All other specific questions can be directed to the faculty leader.

Autism Research & Resource
This year, Archway Glendale and Glendale Prep will be working with the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC) on a project regarding a universal screening for social challenges at public schools. The idea is that screening children for social challenges early and identifying and addressing those challenges will have a significant positive effect on their school experience. We plan to take a role in the research that SARRC is doing in this area this year with our 8th grade students. You are also invited to a Q&A session with Mr. Navarrette, Great Hearts’ Director of Exceptional Student Services, and a representative from SARRC regarding the project. At this session, you will hear more about the work that SARRC and Great Hearts have already done and plans for the project in the future. The Q&A session is scheduled for Thursday, October 3, at 6:00 p.m. in the Archway Multipurpose Room. We look forward to seeing you there!
