A Note From Headmaster Hello Parents,We have finished our first two days of remote learning. It was exciting to be back and see our teachers engaging with our students. I hope your son or daughter enjoyed interacting with teachers and classmates. It has likely been some time since students have been disciplined to wake up at a given time, prepare for class, participate and share ideas, complete work, and then do it again, online. We know it will take time to find a groove; communication is so vital during remote learning. Students should be reaching out directly to teachers if they have questions about a lesson or difficulty accessing and submitting work through Google Classroom. They should be checking their classes to see if there are any teacher notifications. There is one policy we have put in place for this 3-week remote start. If a student does not complete work in a class for two consecutive days, teachers will be reaching out to parents directly to share the concern and offer assistance. We want all students to have a strong start. The block schedule and abbreviated day is designed to help students meet the academic expectations early in the quarter because the rigor will begin to gradually increase after our return onsite and continued online learning for some. We understand that transitions can be challenging, and there may be a tendency to want to step in to help our children. Know that the best way for you to support your children’s growth and maturity is to encourage them to take personal responsibility. Students must maintain consistent communication with their teachers. Please remind your son or daughter to reach out to teachers; they are there to help! If needed, you can certainly reach out to teachers directly as well. Sincerely, Mr. Navarrette Zoom Security It is important for parents to know that Zoom links will be updated regularly, so students should check their Google Classroom daily to find an updated link. It is essential that students do not repost Zoom links or give out their Google Classroom credentials. Any breach of security will result in disciplinary action taken by the school. The safety of our children is our number one priority. Back to School Challenge Need a new laptop for the school year? The Sandra Day O’Connor Institute wants to help 6th – 9th grade students have a chance to earn one with the Camp O’Connor Civics Challenge. The competition, #OConnorCivicsChallenge, encourages students to learn about civics topics that cover all branches of the government, as well as their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Students then share what they’ve learned with others through creative videos, one to three minutes in length. Finalists for each grade will be awarded Apple products such as a MacBook Pro or iPad Pro. All 6th – 9th grade students are invited to take the challenge today and submit their video before August 16th. Learn more and register by following the link- https://oconnorinstitute.org/civic-programs/civic-engagement-and-education/camp-oconnor-civics-challenge-live/ The Civics Challenge is a program of O’Connor U, a Sandra Day O’Connor Institute initiative that provides innovative online programs, teaching “Civics for Life” to all generations, from middle school students to grandparents.
