A Note From the Headmaster

Dear Glendale Prep Families,

What a great beginning to the school year! Every year has its initial minor confusions and anxieties but we prepare for those in order to overcome them (and, it’s always worth mentioning when we have our fastest first-day pickup on record!). That aside, your children have embarked on an incredible journey this year. As much as you might be familiar with Glendale Prep or know the people, we believe it is even more important that you are familiar with the foundational principles upon which our Academy is built. We want to do our very best this year to show and tell you about our unique approach to education. Please find attached a very short blurb on 12 Principles of Education from Professor Mortimer Adler. The education that GP offers every day grows from this root. Our vision is to be measured against these principles; that is, we invite you to ask along with us, “How consistently does Glendale Prep embody the education?

“Have a wonderful weekend!

Very best,
Brandon Crowe
Headmaster

Study Skills Workshop
Our Study Skills Workshop is rapidly approaching. It will be on Saturday, August 18th from 8:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We strongly recommend that all 6th graders and new students attend; however, all GP students are welcome to join. This workshop includes 3 interactive seminars on the following topics:
1.  Organization and Time Management
2.  Reading and Test Preparation
3.  Note Taking and Outlining

Students are asked to attend the workshop with one parent. The cost of each student/parent “team” is $20 ($30 for 2 or more siblings/parent teams). Light snacks will be provided. Register by Tuesday, August 14th.

Late to School
If a student is late for school, we require that a parent come into the office with their student to sign them in for the day. After three unexcused tardies and every subsequent tardy during a quarter, a student is required to serve detention. For more on tardies please refer to the GP Family Handbook. Thank you for your help to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum.

Label Personal Items and Lost & Found
We ask that your student labels all personal items clearly ie. planners, pencil cases, water bottles, glasses cases, GP sweaters, GP tote bags, Classics to Keep, etc. This will help ensure the return of valuable items to your child.

Lost items that are found are placed in the “Lost and Found” cart located in the courtyard. It is the student’s responsibility to check the cart frequently for known or unknown lost items. The cart will be purged weekly and items that are there for a week or longer will be donated, with the exception of books and uniforms. If your student has lost an item of value, please check with the front office.

Minimizing Classroom Interruptions
In an effort to decrease classroom interruptions, students will not be called out of class for forgotten items. Please ensure students do their best to be prepared for the school day by bringing lunches, sports equipment, and homework with them when they arrive at school in the morning and having a pre-arranged ride home. Personal belongings should be placed in the student’s locker (or locker room for sports equipment) and not stored in the office or in the Lost and Found Cart. Parents can simply drop the forgotten item on the bookshelf in the office lobby. As a reminder, students will not be called out of class or given messages for forgotten items.

Our front office receives a high volume of calls with requests to pass along messages to students while in class. While some of these calls are necessary, we would like to minimize the number of classroom interruptions and use the front office staff’s time efficiently. Thank you for your help.

Traffic Reminder
We would like to remind parents to be safe and courteous when dropping off and picking up your students each day at Glendale Prep. Please review the traffic procedures document, which can be found here and on the school website under Family Resources, and follow faculty instructions in the parking lot to facilitate the safe orderly transportation to and from school.

College Counseling
Be sure to check out Glendale Prep’s college counseling page with the latest updates on events, visits, and resources! College Counseling has many programs planned for the fall, including application workshops and grade-level evening programs for all high school students. We look forward to working with you this year!
