A Note From Headmaster

Hello Parents,

We are quickly approaching our first day of school on August 6th. You will be inundated with a number of emails in the coming week as well as in the days prior to the first day of remote learning. These emails will guide students on how to access their Google Classroom, inform students of the expectations for the 3-week remote start via our Remote Learning Student Orientation Video, and provide students with their individual class schedule.

We have our Bookstore event this coming Monday, July 27th. One person from every family must attend this event. It is essential students have their textbooks for the start of school. Books will be utilized beginning August 6th.

Classes will be in period blocks of 90 minutes Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. with two 30-minute breaks between periods. The goal is not to build out live sessions (synchronous learning) to fill the full 90 minutes, although there may be some Humane Letter seminars that are at least 1 hour. We must take into consideration multiple students working at home, likely on a shared device. We also believe excessive screen-time is not best for students. Screen time should be used primarily for live lessons, viewing recorded videos, efficiently accessing work to be completed off-screen, and submitting assignments. Students should form a daily habit of checking their Google Classroom at the start of the 90-minute block to see if there are recorded videos to watch, assignments to complete, assessments to take, paragraphs/essays to compose, live lessons/guided practice with their teachers, as well as live tutoring sessions. Teachers will provide a weekly plan to students by the Friday preceding each week, so students will see the week at a glance to know when they will have live lessons/tutoring. In a future email, we will provide guidance for how students should write out a weekly schedule to mark out when they will have live lessons they must attend. Prior to these live lessons, students should test video and audio, make sure their video background is appropriate, and be dressed in their school uniform. Again, students are only required to be dressed in their school uniform when attending a live lesson, discussion, or live tutoring session. Wednesday is a unique schedule of 45-minute periods with 15-minute breaks in between.

Tutoring
Teachers will make sure to have at least 45 minutes each week built into this block schedule for live guided practice and live tutoring.

Sectioning
Yesterday, you received an email asking you to complete a form to indicate whether your student will remain online or return to campus for onsite school on August 27th. We are finalizing sectioning based upon those numbers. After sectioning is complete, we will send families individual class schedules that will indicate which course/teacher corresponds with the periods of the block schedule. For families electing for your child to remain online for the entire quarter, we may need to resection students upon their return in Quarter 2 to ensure balanced numbers in our physical classrooms to allow for social distancing. Re-sectioning may also lead to a teacher change as well.

Onsite Return
Many of you are still considering whether or not your student will return onsite after the remote start. I am available to talk with you by phone to answer any questions particular to your family and situation. Here is a general list of what we are doing to ensure the health and safety of our students upon our return:

  • Temperature checks prior to entering the building
  • Students will remain in concentric groups (limited to section and grade) before school, in class, during passing periods, during lunch and lyceum, and at pickup
  • Classrooms changes throughout the day will be minimal (0-2 for most grades) with teachers moving to classrooms to mean a specific section/grade
  • Most sections/grades will have only 1-2 passing periods during the day; locker usage will be limited depending upon the passing period
  • To limit the number of students together during lunch and lyceum, there will be a rotating schedule where some students will eat in class; some students will remain in a classroom for lyceum tutoring and quiet study
  • Students and faculty must wear a mask unless they cannot for a medical reason

We will communicate specific processes and procedures that relate to these significant changes as we approach our onsite start date.

Meeting with Mr. Navarrete; Town Hall
I will be available all day on Monday for individual conversations during our Bookstore event. After you pick up textbooks, please come and see me in Room 404.  Please plan to attend our Town Hall on July 30th at 4:00 p.m., so I can answer questions about our remote start and eventual onsite return. We will send an email with the Zoom link to you in the coming week.

We are excited to see you all in person at Bookstore on Monday, July 27th. As always, please reach out to me directly with questions regarding our remote start as well as our plan to return to campus in late August.

Sincerely,

Mr. Navarrette

GP Bookstore
One person from each family is required to attend Bookstore on Monday, July 27th. Appointment times are available from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. One person from each family will be allowed in the courtyard to pick up all school-issued textbooks, consumables, and student parking tags. If you have not signed up for a time, please click here to do that now. All items below need to be accomplished no later than Sunday, July 26th so we are able to print reports/documents prior to Bookstore:

  • Consumables purchased on the payment portal
  • Student Parking Permits purchased on the payment portal, if applicable
  • Email all documents regarding student parking permit to Mrs. Mooberry, if applicable

When attending Bookstore, please remember to only one person per family attends, remain 6 feet apart, and wear a mask. There are a few volunteers still needed to help at this event. If you would like to volunteer at Bookstore, please click here. Thank you in advance!

Please note sectioning will depend upon which students return onsite and which students remain online. Once we have those numbers, after parents complete the Family Choice Form, we will complete student schedules and locker assignments. This will help keep numbers low in classrooms and hallways. Please check your email early in the week of August 3rd for your child’s class schedule.

Important details regarding the school year will be provided in upcoming emails so, please be sure to check your email often. We will update the Event Calendar on the Glendale Prep website as a resource for our GP families.

Return to Learning – Family Choice Form
Please check your email (both your inbox and spam or junk folder) for a request to fill out a Return to Learning – Parent Choice form on the Enrollment/Re-Enrollment website. This form will provide your final decision as to whether your child will remain online, or if your child will return onsite to finish out Quarter 1, once the state mandate restriction for onsite learning is lifted.

It is essential that you complete this survey no later than July 29th because we will be sectioning students based on these decisions. As soon as sectioning is complete, we will email you your student’s class schedules and locker assignments. Please note, once you complete the survey, you will be unable to retake or change the survey, although you will be able to make a different choice for Quarter 2. More information will follow on how to accomplish that in the upcoming Weekly Blasts.

Transferring
If your plans have changed and you will not return to Glendale Prep for the 2020-21 school year, please contact Mrs. Hayakawa as soon as possible so she can ensure that you sign a withdrawal form and receive your textbook deposit refund.

Used Uniform Sale
Glendale Prep and Archway Glendale PSO are partnering together to offer a used uniform sale tomorrow, July 25th from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Parents must sign up to attend. If you have any questions, please reach out to Raquel Rodriguez at raquelrr@cox.net.

2019-2020 Yearbooks
Please know that we are still waiting on the 2019-20 Yearbook delivery. In March Lifetouch was forced to shut down several locations and/or limit onsite workers, like many other businesses. They are trying to get caught up and get our yearbooks out to us as soon as possible. We continue to contact them frequently for updates and will share any information with you as we receive it.

If you are unsure if you placed your order, you can log into your payment portal account and click the tab “Account,” “Orders,” and “Order History.”

Volunteers & Chaperones
If you would like to be approved to volunteer or chaperone at school events, please click on the link below to complete your background check and gain clearance. The cost is $5.00. Please note, when selecting the school, it will not separate Archway and Prep; the system will approve you for both schools. If you have any questions, please reach out to John Lund, Great Hearts Safety Manager at jlund@greatheartsaz.org.

We look hope to see you this school year!

College Counseling
Class of 2021 students and parents: Be sure to check the College Counseling Google Classroom for updates and helpful information. Application Boot Camp is scheduled with multiple sessions on various days from July 28th  through August 4th. Zoom links to the virtual workshops are posted on the Google Classroom stream. Be advised that face masks are required for all in-person workshops on the Glendale Prep campus.

GP Athletics

  • Physicals: GP Athletes, please continue to submit completed physicals to Register My Athlete for this school year’s sports seasons. Visit the GP website to gain access to the 2020-2021 physical forms.
  • Upcoming Seasons: Glendale Prep Athletics is patiently waiting to receive the league notifications on the upcoming sports seasons. There are many scenarios that are being discussed for the fall high school and middle school seasons. With Covid-19, many safety policies and procedures would have to be in place, as well as state approval to compete in interscholastic sports. When an official update is made, parents and students will be notified by the athletic office. Thank you for your patience.
  • Phase 1 Summer Training Continued – Currently, our fall high school conditioning sports have been given strict policies that pertain to training in “off-season” mode. These summer workouts are scheduled to continue on campus beginning July 27th. Contact the coaches below for information on workout schedules. Swim will not begin until after August 17th. All the information above is subject to change upon any new government restrictions.

Commencement
2020 Senior Graduation was held at Glendale Nazarene Church and was live-streamed for GP families. Although not ideal, it is was wonderful to share the accomplishments, well wishes, and hopes for our graduates that endured a challenging last quarter. A special thanks to Mr. Navarrette and Mr. Withers for their leadership, Mrs. Mooberry for heading the event, Ms. Henrich for her thoughtful commencement speech, Shannon Richards for live streaming the event for our families, Mr. Lam for his photography, Glendale Nazarene Church for hosting us, and most of all the Class of 2020 for their perseverance and accomplishment!

Online Summer School
Special thanks to Mr. Thompson and Ms. O’Rourke for running a successful remote Summer School for our Glendale Prep students. We are grateful for their hard work over their summer break.
