A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

I have this tendency at the end of a school year to already be planning for ways we can improve for the following year. It brings an excitement and thirst for excellence that I believe gives me the remaining fuel to close out another school year. I recently shared with 8th grade parents about changes coming next year when it comes to student character and coaching from teachers. I realize that our current schedule does not allow for what should take place on our campus between teachers and students- a meaningful conversation about character, attitude, how to work through frustrations, and restoration. While I have stressed over and over again that students should not receive a consequence without coaching, the schedule for teachers has not allowed the principle to become a reality. Hence, we often have a situation where teachers may be issuing a consequence, a student would like to have a conversation, but the student is told, “let’s talk later; I have to go to my next class.” Unfortunately, the follow through for teachers and/or students is not consistent. So, a student is left wondering about goodness, truth, equity, justice, but then just has to move on. That is not healthy and can erode trust in a community.

Here is the plan for next year regarding detentions and coaching; it affects you as parents, so it is important I share now (and again, and again), so that we can partner to train great-hearted young men and women.

The first aspect of the plan is that nearly every teacher will have a Lyceum room every day for 25 minutes. While this is an opportunity for students to come for tutoring, we are reserving this time for teachers to follow up with a student to have a discussion from what took place in class. A teacher can speak of expectations; a student can share his or her perspective and ask questions. A detention may be issued or not; that discernment is still left to the teachers. The second aspect of the plan is that detentions will be served after school and will incorporate a time for self-reflection and service. Additionally, teachers will be asked at times to rejoin the student in detention to work for remaining restoration. This provides an opportunity for a second conversation. Trust is the foundation for a meaningful relationship of mutual respect and love. We need to ensure these relationships are formed through every opportunity where a student needs to self-reflect and grow toward goodness. Again, I am sharing this plan with you now to share my heart, the end goal, as well as help you prepare for the reality that you will need to pick up your son or daughter a bit later in the afternoon to then partner in the coaching process as well. There are details we still need to work out, but it was important I share with you now our plan. I apologize for the longer blast.

I wish you all restful summer,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster
