A Note From Headmaster

Happy Thursday Parents,

Yesterday was such a special day. The weather was glorious; roughly fifteen GP faithful were able to see, wave to, and chat briefly with nearly every family. What made the day truly wonderful was seeing students along for the ride or driving themselves for our big event. We returned student belongings, and families returned their athletic jerseys. It was a mixture of emotions. Great joy and great sadness were present, knowing that the year is over in a way; we will no longer be together on campus. I cannot thank enough my team for their preparation and labor of love.

We will be setting up a similar event in May to have families return textbooks, so we will certainly see you all again soon.

I hope you and your family enjoy tomorrow off and have a nice weekend.

Sincerely,

Mr. Navarrette

No Class Tomorrow
There was a scheduled day off on our academic school calendar for tomorrow, Friday, April 10th. Therefore, you will not find any lessons in Google Classroom for that day. Please enjoy the weekend with your family.

Remote Learning Updates
We have confirmation that nearly every student has logged on to Google Classroom. I appreciate your patience as we learn how to access materials and submit assignments. We understand the submission process can be time-consuming and are hoping there is progress in efficiency as we work through another week. Not all classes require a daily assignment, but it may be the case that students will need to submit some assignments regularly. Please reach out to teachers if you are having difficulty submitting assignments.

You have received an email from President Erik Twist. Here are a few highlights from that communiqué as well as some updates particular to Glendale Prep.

  • The last day of school will be Thursday, May 21st.
  • For Early Release Days, there will be no classes/assignments except for Humane Letters and middle school literature classes.
  • Students’ Quarter 4 distance learning coursework will be graded on a “Pass/Fail” basis; Semester 2 courses will be letter-graded. Students who earn a “Pass” in Quarter 4 will receive a letter grade for Semester 2 that is no lower than the letter grade earned for the same course in Quarter 3; distinguished coursework in Quarter 4 may result in a Semester 2 letter grade that is higher than the Quarter 3 grade. In the event that a student earns a “Fail” for Quarter 4 coursework, the semester letter grade for that course may be lower than the Quarter 3 grade, including the possibility of an “F” for the semester and no credits earned.

Parents and students have requested more interactive lessons where students can engage with one another via Zoom or some other platform. We are in the process of gradually incorporating synchronous learning into our Humane Letters classes. Many teachers have already set up individual sessions to tutor students.

It is important for students to have time to see each other’s faces and converse outside of the school’s remote learning platform. I am encouraging parents to make use of technology for students to have group interaction to discuss what they are learning or to simply spend time together. I recommend parental consent and guidance if you are considering using Zoom or some other platform.

Finally, we wanted to share some specific Zoom precautions we are taking as a school and recommend you do so as well if your children are going on Zoom to socialize with friends. All teachers will be using the Waiting Room function so that they can control who is permitted to join the session. Students should make sure they use their first and last names on their profiles. Teachers will ask students to confirm their identity by speaking or showing their faces. At no point should students record or take pictures of a Zoom session. I appreciate those parents who have shared concern and what they are learning about Zoom; please know that we are implementing new safety measures as they develop and are recommended by our network and through our own research.

Refunds and Reimbursements
Great Hearts will issue refunds and reimbursements for programs and activities such as Homework Club, 7th Grade Field Trip, Spring Sports, ECNAs, and other items May 1st-May 15th. If you would like to contribute your refund to the school, please click here no later than May 1st. Please know any contribution will help to fulfill the 2019-2020 budget. Thank you for your support.

Senior Thesis Panels

The Senior Thesis and its defense are an important part of the Glendale Prep tradition. After careful review, we have decided to support our students using the Zoom platform. The Zoom “Host” will send invitations to the presenting senior’s parents, all faculty members, and the senior class. In this way parents, faculty members, and senior classmates will be able to attend the panels.

All panels will consist of two main parts: 1) The Thesis Presentation: a brief presentation (of about 10 minutes) in which the student will highlight the essential ideas of the paper; and 2) The Thesis Panel Discussion: a panel of three faculty readers will be convened to conduct a discussion with the student about his or her Thesis, and finally the audience will submit questions for the student via the “chat” function of Zoom. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. LeTrent at kletrent@glendaleprep.org.

Tax Credit
Our students remain our number one priority. Thank you for your patience as we navigate through this strange and unique time.

During this time of uncertainty, one thing stays certain: income taxes. When you give your 2019 Arizona Public School Tax Credit, you control how your state tax dollars are spent.

Tax Credit support has enriched our students’ experiences at Glendale Prep. You can help us ensure that, after we pass this uncertain time, we can provide all the same robust academy experiences. Remember, when you claim your Tax Credit on your state taxes, you receive the contribution back, dollar for dollar. This is a tangible way you can support GP at no cost to you.

Use this link to make or schedule your Arizona Public School Tax Credit to Glendale Prep today. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DEADLINE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ARIZONA PUBLIC SCHOOL TAX CREDIT REMAINS APRIL 15th!

Thank you again for your partnership in serving our students. Stay safe and healthy!

Your Academy Giving Team
