A Note From Headmaster

Hello Parents,

I hope to remind you in this week’s blast about the recent announcement of an Arizona Great Hearts K-8th grade online school. Our network is very hopeful this new online charter school will gain approval in April so that current Great Hearts students and new students can receive a quality classical online education. It is important for you to know that Glendale Prep will not be serving any distance learning students next school year, so if you are planning for your child to continue as a distance learner, you will need to apply and transfer to this new Great Hearts online school. Our network will send out instructions for this transfer process.

For those of you who will have children in 9th through 12th grade next year, please know that our network will not have any online high school option, so if you are desiring to continue with online education, you will need to enroll in a school outside our network. Again, more information will come out in April but know you can share your interest in the Arizona Great Hearts K-8th grade online school, if you have not done so already, during the re-enrollment process.

Sincerely,

Mr. Navarrette

Re-Enrollment is HERE!
This is the time to indicate your intent to return to Glendale Prep and secure your child’s seat for the 2021-2022 school year. Emails for current 6th-11th graders were sent Monday from the Great Hearts’ lead office. Intent to return or withdraw for the 2021-2022 school year will need to be submitted for ALL students except for graduating seniors. This helps us to award available seats to those eagerly awaiting an offer to attend Glendale Prep.

Re-Enrollment is an easy two-step process:
1. Update the online information forms on a laptop or computer (a smartphone will not work) using the link in the Great Hearts email.
2. Scan one proof of AZ residency that matches the address on the information form (driver’s license, water bill, or electric bill are ideal) and email it to re-enrollment@glendaleprep.org.

We are looking forward to the 2021-2022 school year together!

Traffic Reminder
Parking spots for students, teachers, volunteers, and visitors are very limited. Please use the cue to drop off your child(ren). “…parking in order to either drop off or walk a student to class is not allowed during morning drop-off…” Click here to review the 2020-2021 Traffic Procedure Document.

Glendale Prep Robotics Teams
This past week, the two Robotics Teams at Glendale Prep, Team 18421 – Griffin Robotics and Team 18420 – Metal Masters, competed in their last qualifying tournament in the regular season. Metal Masters led by the seniors JT Janssen, Jeiel Brucker, and Seth Storino earned the Design Award for the second time. Griffin Robotics led by seniors Dylan Johnson and Jacob Johnson earned the highest score at the competition and earned 1st place by having the highest average score in the 6 matches, a first for any Robotics Team at Glendale Prep. Griffin Robotics will continue on to compete in the state meet in early May and the Metal Masters will begin soon transitioning to their post-season and recruiting for the next season.

Videos of the matches will be posted on the combined YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1zupSXAAylFyCJVwZbn-2w

If you would like to support the GP Robotics Teams by donating an older desktop computer or by volunteering as a mentor, please contact Mr. Roper at broper@glendaleprep.org.

Senior Thesis Defense Panels
Senior Thesis Panels are quickly approaching! All panels will consist of two main parts: 1) The Thesis Presentation: a brief presentation (of about 10 minutes) in which the student will highlight the essential ideas of the paper; and 2) The Thesis Panel Discussion: a panel of three faculty readers will be convened to conduct a discussion with the student about his or her Thesis. Parents are invited to attend. Please enter through the front office.

Next week the following students will have their panels:

Senior Student Date & Time
Alexandria Robinson Thurs. 3/11 at 3:30 p.m.
Kiran Waskow Thurs. 3/11 at 3:45 p.m.
Rebecca Ong Fri. 3/12 at 3:30 p.m.
Isabella Ayer Fri. 3/12 at 3:45 p.m.

6th Grade Study Skills Workshop
Please join us for the 6th Grade Study Skills Workshop on Saturday, March 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. via Zoom. We recommend that all 6th-graders who aspire to be stronger students attend. Please note that students are required to wear their uniforms and have a notebook and writing utensils available during the workshop. Entrance past 9:10 a.m. will not be permitted.

While the workshop will be directed toward the students, we encourage parents to be a part of the session as an observer so they can help reinforce the techniques and strategies at home.

This workshop will cover:

  • Organization
  • Time Management
  • Test Preparation
  • Note Taking and Outlining

Students are asked to attend the workshop with at least one parent. The cost is $15 ($25 for 2 or more siblings/parent teams). Space is limited to 25 students, so please sign up right away on the Payment Portal to secure a spot. Registration ends Monday, March 22nd.

Great Hearts Virtual Career Fair
On March 1st and 2nd, the Great Hearts Talent Team hosted their annual career fair – virtually. As school choice and a focus on educating the heart and mind of students continues to grow so does the need for like-minded teachers. If you know someone who would be an asset to the Great Hearts community, please have them reach out to Careers@greatheartsamerica.org or RBaumann@greatheartsamerica.org.

Volunteers
The teachers, students, and staff greatly appreciate the time volunteers are willing to share. Volunteering allows you to connect to our community and make it a better place. Even helping with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of our students and teachers.

As you might know, we partnered with Raptor Technologies to screen our volunteers and visitors on campus. A volunteer screen is more in-depth than a visitor screen as visitors are always with a staff member when on campus. Therefore, if you volunteer or plan on volunteering and have not submitted a volunteer application, please do that now here: complete and submit a volunteer application. Upon approval, you will receive instructions on the next steps.

If you have questions, please reach out to Mrs. Hayakawa.

Prepared for the Day
To limit the exposure of Covid-19 throughout the campus we ask that students are prepared for school each day. Please ensure your child has lunch, books, homework, mask, water bottle, and transportation plans the night before. It should only be a very rare occasion that a forgotten item is left in the front office to be picked up or a calls home is needed. Lunches should not be dropped off or calls made home on a regular basis. Thank you for helping to keep our campus healthy and running. Please email any questions to Mrs. Hayakawa at shayakawa@glendaleprep.org.

COVID Prevention
Please keep students home at the onset of anyone living in the home exhibiting COVID-like symptoms. This will help keep teachers and students in class and our campus running.

Call or email the attendance line, and students will be marked COVID Quarantine Excused Absence as long as details are left in the message so the office can excuse the absence. Email attendance@glendaleprep.org or call 623-889-0822 ext. 4.

TAX CREDIT
Working on your taxes this weekend? Don’t forget to subtract up to $400 from your Arizona State tax bill. For example, if you discover you owe the State of Arizona a check for $750…don’t write a check for $750.  Instead, write Arizona a check for $350 and write a second check to Glendale Prep for $400 (or click on the link below to use your credit card). You can choose how your tax dollars are spent. Thank you, Arizona!

If you have yet to make your Tax Credit contribution to Glendale Prep, you have until April 15, 2021, to make this important contribution to our school and receive a dollar-for-dollar credit off your Arizona State tax bill. For questions contact Cathy Sparks at 602.770.7552 or csparks@glendaleprep.org. Thank you for supporting our school! Click here to DONATE NOW.
