A Note from the Headmaster
Hello,
I recently met with a graduate who is discussing in a college class if the classics should be read in secondary education. The text in question is To Kill a Mockingbird. It was a wonderful discussion but made me share about more foundational principles. We pondered questions about why we love stories, what kind of stories do we love, why teach literature, and how should we teach literature? So, now back to the essential question, should students read and discuss To Kill a Mockingbird? You likely guessed it- Students should absolutely enjoy this masterpiece. But critics may believe the content is too charged; some may wonder if today’s students can personally relate to seeing heartbreaking injustice a small town in Alabama. Our students can certainly understand the denial of human dignity, even if they cannot personally experience the narrow particulars of the specific context. Our students can relate to young Jem coming of age to see that while adults preach virtue, some men and women actually live otherwise, revealing hypocrisy. Our students can appreciate Boo Radley, who comes under the judgment of all, but may actually be the only individual who truly “sees” the people of Maycomb.
It is a discussion like this…considering the why that reminds us we are human and reminds us we share a common humanity. That is why we read the classics; they connect with each and every one of us as humans and compel us to consider what is good. They provide a safe environment to wrestle with ideas that are often avoided in the “real world.” I was grateful for the conversation with the alumnus and reminded of our unique but delightful community.
Have a nice weekend,
Mr. Navarrette

Community Investment
Seniors Thesis Defense Panels are well under way! A Glendale Prep Senior Thesis is the culmination of a Great Hearts education and calls on students to create and develop their own thoughts in an original paper. This requires self-discipline and perseverance as scholars work on an independent academic project that takes months to complete. The end result will be an hour-long oral examination in front of a panel of teachers, advisors, staff, and an audience of friends and family. Like everything that happens at our school, the Senior Thesis program is a remarkable partnership between students and teachers.
Your support in Community Investment is vital and provides both students and teachers with the resources they need to excel. To make a pledge to Glendale Prep’s 2021-22 Community Investment campaign:
