A Note From Headmaster

Greetings,

This last week we welcomed new parents to Glendale Prep, both onsite and via Zoom. I always marvel at how well Mrs. Hayakawa and the team organize the event, welcome our parents, and share information for a smooth transition from Archway or from a different school. Mr. Withers and I enjoyed our brief time with parents as we took them on a school tour and spoke about our school, its philosophy, and distinctives. It can be good to look back over the years and remember why we chose this school for our children. Mrs. Hayakawa shared with parents how Glendale Prep’s emphasis on structure and moral character was the draw for her and her family. For some of you, it might have been the rigorous academic course of study or smaller class size. I wanted to share a few of the philosophical principles of our school, hoping these will remind us of the great work we share together in offering our children this formative education.

We believe that the world is ordered and knowable and that the human intellect, while imperfect, can attain knowledge of reality through reason, hard work, and a coherent program of study.

We believe that truth exists, and we must seek it relentlessly by disciplined study and good-willed conversation.

We do not dispute the usefulness of a liberal arts education, and we gladly prepare our students for college studies, but our main purpose is the formation of the heart and mind.

The greatest number of our students benefit when the intellectual and moral bar is set high in the classroom. Lowering expectations is an act of misguided sympathy, not of love and mercy.

[We] do not deploy a “character curriculum.” Students are formed by the culture of the school, implied and explicit, and each student’s choices to lead within it.

Enjoy the extended weekend,

Mr. Navarrette

COVID Prevention
Please keep students home at the onset of anyone living in the home exhibiting COVID like symptoms. This will help keep teachers and students in class and our campus running.

Call or email the attendance line, and students will be marked COVID Quarantine Excused Absence as long as details are left in the message so the office can excuse the absence. Email attendance@glendaleprep.org or call 623-889-0822 ext. 4.

Quarter 3 Deficiency Notices
Quarter 3 Deficiencies were sent out this week. If your student receives a Deficiency Notice, please talk it over with your child so a plan of action can be put into place for future success. Students are encouraged to reach out to their teachers to follow up with a plan to improve. Teachers are always available to help students during tutoring hours.

Re-Enrollment
Re-enrollment is coming! This will be the time to indicate your intent to return to Glendale Prep and secure your child’s seat for the 2021-2022 school year. Emails for current 6th-11th graders will be sent out the week of March 1st from the Great Hearts’ lead office. More information coming soon!

Great Hearts Telethon

Great Hearts is seeking an individual/couple to represent our academy on the 2021 Great Hearts Telethon Committee. The Great Hearts Telethon raises funds to benefit the Teacher Excellence Fund, which is distributed to our faculty as bonus compensation on an annual basis. Glendale Prep received $20,481 in December 2020 from this initiative. The Telethon will take place on September 25th and a full description of the position can be found here. For more information about the Teacher Excellence Fund, please contact Cathy Sparks at csparks@glendaleprep.org.
