A Note From Headmaster

Hello Parents,

What a year 2020 has been; what a semester we have shared together! Our lives are certainly different, and we may not even remember what our day-to-day experiences used to be. Nevertheless, we were able to come together as a community to seek good for our greatest treasure- our children. While we may be exhausted, I will forever cherish seeing my colleagues, you in your cars, and our students. Even though I could not see their noses and mouths, we were able to look into their eyes daily and see a light shining brightly. Each and every day is a gift, and we have so much to be grateful for as we approach the end of another year.

I had the pleasure of recently attending a service where a Glendale Prep alumnus spoke after spending over two years away from his family, enduring various challenges and hardships, and even the “unknown” about when he would return home to see his family and friends. He shared these words which he took from a talk that brought him comfort while away, To express gratitude is gracious and honorable, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live with gratitude ever in our hearts is to touch heaven.

I am truly grateful for you. I wish you and your family peace and hope during this break.

Sincerely,

Mr. Navarrette

Pick Up & Drop Off
We are asking all families to revisit the pick-up and drop-off procedures, especially if you are dropping off and picking up for the first time this school year (see the map linked below). Share the procedure and plan for timing with all drivers who will be picking up your child. Please expect drop off to take a bit longer now that more families have chosen in-person learning for Semester 2. It is important to precisely time picking up students to ensure you will not have to exit and re-enter the campus. Dismissals continue to be staggered, so not all students will be ready for pickup on the curb at the beginning of dismissal, and students must be picked up at their grade level location. If you are picking up multiple students in different grades, we strongly recommend you arrive on campus at the time of the student with the latest dismissal time, because vehicles will be waved to keep moving in the passing lane and cannot wait in the designated student waiting area. Click here to view the drop-off and pickup procedures and map. If you arrive before 3:00 p.m. on regular days or noon on early release days, you will be asked to exit and re-enter the campus as it causes delays in the Archway pickup lines.

If you have children at both Archway Glendale and Glendale Prep, please drop them off at the same location. Vehicles that drop off students on the north curb near the Glendale Prep gym, should NOT continue to the east curb to drop off additional students. (Archway Glendale’s leadership strongly recommends that families dropping off both Archway Glendale and Glendale Prep students use the east curb only.)

Refunds
You might have noticed a refund from Glendale Prep on your credit card recently. GP has refunded the all-school field trip fee ($15), 6th Grade Study Skills Workshop ($25), and Senior Dance ($20) purchases. Due to the enduring costs of Covid protocols like the purchase of extra technology and disinfecting, many parents mentioned that they would like these funds redirected to the school. As not to create confusion at this busy time, leadership decided to submit the refund directly back to you. Feel free to donate that money to Community Investment by clicking here if you feel led. Thank you for your flexibility and partnership as we navigate through these changing times.

Evaluations
Evaluations will be released to parents during the first week of Semester 2 via email. This is to ensure time for teachers to grade all late finals and write evaluations for each student. Thank you for your patience.

Semester 2 Student Schedules
2nd Semester Student Schedules will be sent out today via email. Please print the schedule and locker information for your student and have them place it in their backpack for the first day of the 2nd Semester on Thursday, January 7th (Block B Day).

International Travel Over Break
Is your family planning on traveling internationally over Winter Break? Please keep in mind the Great Hearts guidelines on international travel (including Mexico).

Per our Health Policy:

  • Students and staff must stay home for 5 days from the time of returning home from international travel AND receive a negative COVID test 5 days or more after returning from travel.
  • Or stay home for 14 days from the time of returning home from international travel without a COVID test. During this 14-day period, take these steps to monitor your health and practice social distancing:
    • Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day and monitor for fever. Also, watch for a cough or trouble breathing.
    • Stay home and avoid contact with others. Do not go to work or school.

Please see the following link to read the Policy in its entirety: https://www.greatheartsamerica.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/GH-Health-Policy-revised-8.11.20.pdf. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Sarbacker our COVID Coordinator.

Community Investment
Hello GP families!

A Great Hearts education at Glendale Prep is only possible with the support of our families and friends.

Your gifts to Community Investment and your contribution of your Public School Tax Credit are crucial to the success of our academy. In fact, they make an immediate difference to our operational budget.

Did you know that we have spent $435 per pupil on COVID related expenses? This includes expenses related to both in-person and remote learning: increased cleaning from day porters, enhanced software, and updated webcams/microphones, etc.

We received $3.52 per pupil from FEMA and $83.82 per pupil from the CARES Act to pay for COVID related expenses. We maintain $347.60 per pupil in expenses that we do not foresee being reimbursed. This is in addition to the gap in funding we receive from the state in comparison to our neighboring district schools.

The safety of your students and teachers is our #1 priority. We are incredibly grateful for having the capacity to protect our community to the best of our ability. Your support of Community Investment and Tax Credit through donations are crucial. Will you consider giving to one or both today?

You may donate to Community Investment through this link and contribute your Tax Credit through this link.

Thank you sincerely!
