A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

This past week was shortened with Thanksgiving. The virtue of gratitude is one that I believe is foundational for other virtues. When I think about striving to be patient in difficult circumstances, I can move away from my frustration or anguish by counting my blessings. When I can be moved to anger rather than love in my various relationships, my heart can soften when I consider what I am thankful for when it comes to the individual with whom I am having a conflict. When despair creeps in, and it can be difficult to find hope in the midst of the storm, I can stop and think about the subtle goodness that is there and ultimately find peace. One of my favorite stories that has been depicted in beautiful classical art is St. Paul and the shipwreck off the coast of Malta. Every single person was saved by floating on broken pieces of the ship until landing safely on the island.

There is so much to be thankful for, and even in the midst of the storm, we can be thankful for the broken pieces of ship.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Athletics Eligibility

GP Athletics is continuously striving for excellence in all we do. It is important that our student-athletes feel both supported and encouraged as a student first. Success in the classroom is not easily achieved; it requires effort and discipline on all levels. This year, GP Athletics will continue our grade and eligibility process. Please click HERE to access it for the remainder of the winter season, which covers both 2ndand 3rd quarter. Mr. Hawkins and the coaching staff will inform families of all eligibility decisions and disciplines.

Student Pickup by 3:45

Please be sure your students are picked up by 3:45 pm. If you are unable to pick up your student by that time, or wish for him or her to have time to complete homework in a structured, supervised environment, please consider signing up for Homework Club.

Winter Concert

Remember that the Prep School Winter Concerts are on the evening of Wednesday, December 7th at Haven Church in Glendale (5902 W Cactus Rd, Glendale, AZ 85304). All grade 7, 8, 9, and 10 students in Music class are required to perform that evening, and will be joined by all of our extracurricular choirs (Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Bella Voce, Men’s Choir, and Middle School Choir). If your students are participating in the concert, they will receive detailed information from their teacher/director about the concert, but we also encourage all students and families to come to hear these fine performers share their musical gifts with you.

There are two separate concerts on December 7th. The Middle School concert begins at 5:30 pm and the High School concert begins at 7:00 pm. Students must provide their own transportation the evening of the concert. Middle School performers must arrive at the church by 4:30 pm to warm-up and get into position. High school students must arrive at the church by 5:55 pm.

Rehearsal for the concert will take place during the school day on Tuesday, December 6th. Students will be transported to and from Glendale Prep by bus for the rehearsal at Haven Church.

NOTE: Students in the extracurricular choirs may be given specific dress instructions that differ from the following guidelines.

Concert attire for MIDDLE-school boys is Black and White, as follows:

-White long-sleeved collared dress shirt and black dress slacks
-Long black necktie (bowties are not allowed)
-Black belt, black socks, and dress shoes (sneakers are not dress shoes)
No denim, external pockets, patterned tops, or any other deviation from the concert attire allowed.

Concert attire for MIDDLE-school girls is Black and White, as follows:

-A white blouse with solid black dress slacks or black skirt. If a girl would like to wear a black dress, she must cover the top of the dress with a white blouse or white cardigan so that the look is consistent with the uniform of a white blouse with black skirt/pants. Sleeves for blouses or dresses must be cap-sleeve or longer, and skirts or dresses must not be shorter than the knee.
-Black dress shoes (Open-toed dress shoes are permitted, but flip-flops, sneakers, or boots are not allowed.) Heels of any kind must be very low.
-Solid black tights beneath skirts are permitted. Leggings or yoga pants are not a substitute for dress slacks.
-Nail polish and make-up must follow dress code guidelines.
No denim, external pockets on pants, patterned tops, or any other deviation from the concert attire code allowed.

Concert attire for HIGH-school students:

Concert attire for high school is ALL BLACK for both boys and girls, as follows:

BOYS will wear black long-sleeved collared dress shirts with black slacks, black belt, black dress shoes, and no tie. Sneakers are not dress shoes.

GIRLS will wear a black dress, or a black blouse with black skirt or black dress slacks, and black dress shoes (open-toed dress shoes are permitted, but flip-flops, sneakers, or boots will not be allowed). Heels of any kind must be very low.

Ladies’ concert clothing and make-up must follow the dress code in the family handbook.

Attire must be professional, modest, and follow Glendale Prep dress code guidelines.

College Counseling

SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS:  College Counseling is offering an opportunity to take a full-length practice ACT on Saturday, December 3, 2022 from 8am-Noon at Glendale Prep. Cost is $10 at the door. The advantage of taking an ACT practice test is that it allows results to be compared with PSAT results to determine if a student should focus on the SAT or ACT as part of their standardized testing component for college applications. Please use this LINK to RSVP your student. Deadline to register is Thursday, December 1st at 5:00pm.
