A Note From Headmaster

Hello Parents,

As we approach the Thanksgiving Break, it is important for you to know students will not return to campus after the break for a few days. All students will be distance learners Monday, November 30th through Wednesday, December 2nd. We believe this is prudent given that many families will likely come together for food and fellowship, so there is time to identify symptoms of illness before a student returns onsite.

Our teachers are making plans to teach all students synchronously (live online) by posting Zoom links to their Google Classroom. Current onsite students should look for classroom invitations via their Google Classroom if they do not already have access. We will remain on our block schedule with class times beginning and ending as we have all of Quarter 2. If your child, who is currently an onsite student, will need a device for the three-day distance learning, please contact Mrs. Mooberry.

All onsite students will return to campus on Thursday, December 3rd.

As a reminder, please do not send your child back to campus on Thursday, December 3, if:

  1. Anyone they have been in contact with has tested positive for COVID-19.
  2. They have been tested for COVID-19 and are waiting for test results.
  3. Someone in their household has been tested for COVID-19 and is waiting for test results.
  4. They have any symptoms of COVID-19, which include fever (>100.4°F), cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chills, sore throat, headache, muscle/body aches, runny nose or congestion, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or a new loss of taste or smell.
  5. They have traveled internationally and do not have a negative COVID-19 test taken five or more days after their return.

I have also made sure to include a list of FAQs here for you to review. I appreciate your partnership as we work to keep our school as healthy and as safe as possible.

6th Grade Study Skills Workshop
We are offering our Study Skills Workshop to all 6th graders on Friday, December 4th from 12:05 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Please note that this is an Early Release Day. The workshop is scheduled on an early release day, Friday, December 4th, from 12:05 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. A remote option will be provided for Distance Learners (only) and an on-campus option will be provided for on-site students (only). We strongly recommend that all 6th graders attend.

This workshop includes 3 interactive seminars on the following topics:
1.  Organization and Time Management
2.  Reading and Test Preparation
3.  Note Taking and Outlining

Senior Dance
All Seniors (including Distance Learners) are invited to stroll down memory lane and enter a world filled with starlight and music! *PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE

What: A Walk Down Memory Lane
Where: Glendale Prep Courtyard
When: *SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5TH
Time: 6:30PM – 9:00PM (No entry past 7:00PM)
Tickets: $15 until December 4th. Click here to purchase and sign the waiver.
Details: The dress code will be semi-formal.

Gentlemen should wear slacks, a belt, a button-up shirt, and a tie; sportscoats/blazers are strongly
encouraged. Slacks should not be too tight or too baggy and should fit well at the natural waist.

Ladies should wear dresses/tops that have necklines within four finger widths below the collar bone. The length of the dress hemline should be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee at any point. No dresses/tops that are see-through or have open backs. Dresses/tops may be strapless or have spaghetti straps.

Deficiency Notices: Quarter 2
Quarter 2 Deficiencies continue to get sent out when students become deficient. If your student receives a Deficiency Notice, please talk it over with your child so a plan of action can be put into place for future success. Students are encouraged to reach out to their teachers to follow up with a plan to improve. Teachers are always available to help students during tutoring hours.

International Travel Over Break
Is your family planning on traveling internationally over Thanksgiving or Winter Break? Please keep in mind the Great Hearts guidelines on international travel (including Mexico).
Per our Health Policy:

  • Students and staff must stay home for 5 days from the time of returning home from international travel AND receive a negative COVID test 5 days or more after returning from travel.
  • Or stay home for 14 days from the time of returning home from international travel without a COVID test. During this 14-day period, take these steps to monitor your health and practice social distancing:
    • Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day and monitor for fever. Also, watch for a cough or trouble breathing.
    • Stay home and avoid contact with others. Do not go to work or school.

Military Identifier (Optional)
The adoption of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) recognizes military-connected students, such as students with a parent on active military duty. The Military Student Identifier (MSI) questions listed below, will provide educators with critical information to personalize attention for military dependent children. Parents/Guardians may decline to respond to these voluntary questions. If a parent/guardian declines, the answer will be marked as a “no.” Parents/Guardians will not be asked to verify their military status by showing a military identification or other DOD documentation.

If questions below apply to your student, please click here, which will notify Mrs. Hayakawa of your student’s name and the question(s) you are responding “yes” to so that Glendale Prep can accurately update the information in their system as needed.

·       Is the student a dependent of a member of the United States military service in the Active Duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard?

·       Is the student a dependent of a full-time member of the National Guard, or Reserve Force of the United States Military (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Air Force.)

·       Is the student a dependent of a member of the National Guard, or Reserve Force of the United States Military (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Air Force.)

We ask that all families respond no later than Monday, November 30th. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to your academy directly.

COVID Corner: Primary vs Secondary
We have had some questions regarding when a student is quarantined. It comes down to how they are classified as a contact.

  • A “primary contact” (also referred to as a “close contact”) is someone who has been within 6 feet of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 for an accumulated time of 15 min or more over a period of 24 hours
  • A “secondary contact” is someone who has been within 6 feet of a “primary contact” for an accumulated time of 15 min or more over a period of 24 hours

Our process only quarantines primary contacts. The CDC and Maricopa County Health Department (MCHD) both recommend that primary contacts quarantine for a full 14-day period. This is because the COVID-19 virus can take anywhere from 5-14 days to incubate, so in compliance with this recommendation and to prevent any spread within our community we will require all close contacts to remain in quarantine for the full 14 days. People in quarantine should stay home, separate themselves from others, monitor their health, and follow directions from their state or local health department. Here at Glendale Prep, this means that your student may not be on campus and will not be able to participate in any school activities during this time if he/she is identified as a “primary contact.” If you have any questions regarding our COVID policies, please contact Mrs. Sarbacker at ksarbacker@glendaleprep.org.

Prepared for the School Day
Please ensure your child has their lunch, books, homework, mask, water bottle, and transportation plans before they arrive at school each morning. Lunches should only be dropped off on the rare occasion that lunch is accidentally left in the car or at home. This is a great habit to instill in our children at a young age and limits the amount of traffic during the busy lunch hour in the front office. Thank you for your partnership.

College Counseling

  • ACE PROGRAM:  Offered through Maricopa Community Colleges, this program assists students in the transition from high school to college. Applications for this program are done during sophomore year of high school. Follow this LINK for more information regarding this program.
  • JUNIORS:  Please be sure to read the College 101 email sent to all families this past Wednesday. Make sure to “save the dates” for each applicable session. You can also find this information in the College Counseling: Class of 2022 Google Classroom. Our first session is Friday, December 4th at 1:00 p.m., and all junior students should plan on participating via Zoom. Students will need to complete pre-work assignments for this session and will find it posted in the Google Classroom next week.
  • SENIORS:  Make sure you have completed the FAFSA as soon as possible. Colleges and universities utilize this form to determine financial aid and many require it on file to distribute merit aid scholarships. A select few colleges and universities also require the CSS Profile to be completed. Make sure you know what each school requires and their deadlines.
  • SENIORS, JUNIORS, AND SOPHOMORES: Remember to frequently check the College Counseling Google Classroom for valuable information regarding upcoming events and assignments.

GP Athletics
Winter Sports Seasons
The official start date of our Winter Season Athletics (HS/MS) is December 3rd upon return from our extended Thanksgiving break. All registermyathlete accounts will be required in order to participate and the payment portal will open on 11/25/20.
