A Note from the Headmaster
Hello Parents, As we move into the three-day weekend, I have three highlights: First, thank you to all of the veterans in our community. We are so blessed to have men and women who either have sacrificed in the past or continue to sacrifice daily for us. Our own Mr. Dyer and Officer “H” are veterans, and we were excited to thank them as a study body yesterday at the end of field day. Secondly, next week we will send out deficiency notices and mid-quarter progress reports. We sent out these reports in Quarter 1, and I think students and parents appreciated this very much. Please see below for more information and look for an email on Tuesday, November 14th. Lastly, Field Day was amazing. I want to thank Mrs. Mooberry and Mrs. Haley for their work in putting it all together. Thank you, as well, to all of our parents who helped volunteer. In the end, the winner was House Lutra! Happy Veteran’s Day, Student Drop-off and Pick-up Reminder Please remember students are not to be dropped-off or picked-up on Pinnacle Peak Rd. On Wednesday, a local sheriff stopped by and asked that we share with families that our neighbors have raised a concern about students exiting cars on Pinnacle Peak and littering. We were also informed they will be patrolling the area during busy times and will be ticketing. Please partner with us to be the best neighbors possible. Student Drivers- IMPORTANT We are seeing a lot of tardies from our student drivers who park on campus. Please remember that excessive tardies can result in their parking privileges being temporarily suspended or even revoked. Please see the excerpt from the Student Driving Waiver that all student drivers must sign. Four or more tardies per quarter is considered excessive.
Mid-Quarter Progress Reports This coming Tuesday, all parents will receive a mid-quarter progress report for their child, similar to first quarter. Additionally, beginning this Monday and over the course of the next week and a half, some parents will receive a deficiency notice, which will detail both how their child has become deficient (with an overall quarter grade of D or F) and what steps he or she can take to move out of deficiency. We believe the combination of Deficiency Notices and mid-quarter progress reports will help foster meaningful and effective conversations about grades. Winter Concerts This year, our Winter Concerts will be on two separate nights – the Instrumental Concert (7th and 8th grade music classes, Jazz Band and Orchestra) will be on Wednesday, November 29th at 6:30 pm, while the Vocal Music Concert (9th and 10th grade music classes and all extra-curricular choirs) will be on Wednesday, December 6th at 6:30 pm. Both concerts will be held at Haven Church in Glendale (5902 W Cactus Rd, Glendale, AZ 85304). Students must provide their own transportation the evening of the concert and must arrive at the church by 5:00 pm on the evening of their concert. All students in curricular music classes are required to participate in the concert as a portion of their music grade. If your students are participating in the concert, they will receive detailed information from their teacher/director about the concert, but we also encourage all students and families to come to hear these fine performers share their musical gifts with you. High School Rewrite Policy In order to further support our students’ writing development, we are encouraging a crucial aspect to the writing process: rewriting. After receiving a rubric, feedback, and grade on a writing assignment, students now have the opportunity to revise and resubmit their work to improve their essay score. Students who receive lower than a 70% (C-) must submit a rewrite using the rubric and feedback provided by their teacher. A rewrite is not required for an essay score of a C- or above, but it is optional and encouraged. Students may receive up to a full letter grade back for their revised submission. A full letter grade will only be given to students who thoroughly address and alter their written work to resolve all aspects of the rubric and feedback provided by their teacher. Correcting grammatical errors only will not earn a full letter grade increase on a student’s final essay grade. We are looking forward to continuing to support the writing growth of our students in this way. Please encourage your students to reach out to their teachers if they have questions about this new rewrite policy. Seniors: Yearbook Honor The Yearbook 2023-2024 will honor our Seniors in special pages. Please remind your senior to return his or her Senior Quote Form with their quote of choice to HL teachers before December 1st, 2023. If you have any questions, please reach out to your HL teacher or Madame Cognet-Pereira. Be inspired! Giving Tuesday College Counseling A Practice ACT will be held on Saturday, December 2nd, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Glendale Prep. After taking the test, students will receive a score report; a College Counselor will compare their ACT score with their estimated SAT score (derived from your child’s October PSAT score) to help determine if your student has an affinity toward one test over the other (ACT vs. SAT). If you are interested, please sign up HERE. The cost is $10.00. Please bring cash to the practice test on December 2nd. The deadline to register is Thursday, November 30th at 5:00 PM. UPCOMING COLLEGE REP VISITS: We are very fortunate to have college representatives come to GP and talk to our students. These take place in the library over lunch/lyceum and students can bring their lunch. The list of visits is on the College Counseling Bulleting Board outside Mrs. Ortiz’s office, please check it weekly and sign up for visits. Advanced Placement (AP) Exams will take place at Scottsdale Prep in the spring and are open to all high school students who wish to self-study and sit for an exam. Please note that AP exams are not part of our curriculum, nor is there an expectation from colleges that our students report AP scores. Registration is a two-part process: 1. Students/parents go to Scottsdale Prep’s Configio to select and pay for exam. 2. Student logs-in to their College Board account and input the ‘active join code’ found on the Configio site when they paid for the exam. The cost is $138.00 per exam by March 1st, 2024. Participants should bring non-mechanical number two pencils and a personal calculator to the exam. Athletic Eligibility GP Athletics is continuously striving for excellence in all we do.
