A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

This Thursday, we held our annual blazer ceremony. This is a special event where our sophomores receive their ties, and our juniors receive their blazers. One detail that makes this blazer ceremony unique is that our own seniors present the sophomores with ties and put blazers on our juniors.

Our beloved Mrs. Maratea spoke and helped our student body come to see the importance of the blazer as a sign also of responsibility and expectation to lead by example and hold others accountable in love. Here were some words from Mrs. Maratea:

“Now juniors, I want to speak directly to you. When wearing this blazer, you take on the special responsibility of which the seniors are also aware (aside from gaining an extra pocket or two). You are becoming the leaders of this community, and as such, you are looked up to with the belief that you have the wisdom and other necessary virtues to do the right thing, even when it’s difficult. If you take this statement seriously, it very well may be daunting and therefore tempting to succumb to acting immaturely and falling short of these expectations. I urge you to fight the temptation to be passive by asking for help, rather, and by being good friends to each other, which again, means holding each other accountable and requiring excellence from yourselves and each other.”

This ceremony is particularly special for me as I have the privilege of shaking the hands of sophomores and juniors after they receive their tie and blazer, respectively. I could not help but think about all the history, personality, interaction, joy, sorrow, hard work, stress, perseverance, and genuine care that permeated each smile. It was a moment I will cherish forever.

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Field Day

As a reminder, Field Day is Wednesday, November 8th. We’ve combined the best of both athletic and academic games to yield a day of fun, House spirit, and teamwork! Field Day attendance is required, just as it would be on any regular early release day.

1. What to Wear

Students must wear:

  • Glendale Prep House T-shirts (encouraged and preferred)! **New House shirts will be handed out Monday; sizes are based on the preferences selected during the 2023 consumables online purchase.
  • GP polo/oxford
  • T-Shirt in House color
  • Clothing may display small athletic team logos (professional or collegiate) or athletic brand names (e.g. Adidas).
  • Athletic pants, leggings, yoga pants, or sweatpants/joggers; athletic shorts must either be mid-thigh or be paired over other pants/shorts reaching to at least mid-thigh.
  • Athletic footwear

Prohibited items:

  • No spandex or bike shorts alone
  • No short shorts. Again, shorts must reach the middle of the thigh or longer.
  • No jeans.
  • No clothing displaying pop culture images or inappropriate images or messages.
  • No crop tops, tank tops, spaghetti strap tops, shirts that expose the stomach when arms are raised (as to catch things in the air), or sleeveless shirts.
  • No dress shoes, flip flops, clogs, slides, crocs, or sandal.

2. What to bring

  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen (highly encouraged)
  • Baseball cap/visor may be worn outside

Field Day Scheduling

We are excited that Field Day is coming on Wednesday, November 8th! Please remember that students will not be in normal classes this day and it will take longer for the front office to locate your student if he or she needs to leave early. Please schedule appointments around Field Day if possible, or plan plenty of extra time if picking up your student during the school day is unavoidable.

High School Rewrite Policy

In order to further support our students’ writing development, we are encouraging a crucial aspect to the writing process: rewriting. After receiving a rubric, feedback, and grade on a writing assignment, students now have the opportunity to revise and resubmit their work to improve their essay score.

Students who receive lower than a 70% (C-) must submit a rewrite using the rubric and feedback provided by their teacher. A rewrite is not required for an essay score of a C- or above, but it is optional and encouraged.

Students may receive up to a full letter grade back for their revised submission. A full letter grade will only be given to students who thoroughly address and alter their written work to resolve all aspects of the rubric and feedback provided by their teacher. Correcting grammatical errors only will not earn a full letter grade increase on a student’s final essay grade.

We are looking forward to continuing to support the writing growth of our students in this way. Please encourage your students to reach out to their teachers if they have questions about this new rewrite policy.

Seniors: Yearbook Honor

The Yearbook 2023-2024 will honor our Seniors in special pages. Please remind your senior to return his or her Senior Quote Form with their quote of choice to HL teachers before December 1st, 2023.

If you have any questions, please reach out to your HL teacher or Madame Cognet-Pereira.

Be inspired!

Last Day for Shorts

Today was the last day to wear uniform shorts. Beginning this Monday, November 6th only pants and skirts may be worn to school. Shorts may not be worn again until after Spring Break. As a reminder, gentlemen may not wear ankle socks with pants. “Socks must be white or solid black, navy, or dark brown in color, and extend above the ankle and be free of visible brand logos, patterns, or decorations.”

Updated Tutoring Schedule

The tutoring schedule has been updated for Quarter Two. Please click HERE  to see the latest version and use it to help your student plan a successful quarter. Hard copies are printed in the front office. Additionally, the most recent version of the tutoring schedule is always on our website under the Academics tab and linked at the bottom of each Weekly Blast.

Griffin Players Presents The Physicists

Join the Griffin Players for their fall production, The Physicists. When Inspector Raina Voss arrives at Les Cerisiers sanatorium to investigate the second murder of a nurse in as many months, she finds three asylum patients: one who believes he is Albert Einstein, a second who believes he is Sir Isaac Newton, and a third, Mobius, to whom King Solomon regularly appears. As the motivation behind the murders becomes clear, we find ourselves in a dizzying world where the insane may be making the most rational choices, and the nurses and psychiatrists may be more insane than the residents of the asylum. Performances are TONIGHT, Friday, November 3rd at 7:30pm, and TOMORROW Saturday November 4th at 2:30pm and 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for everyone else, and can be purchased on the payment portal HERE or at the door.

Open Enrollment- NEW STUDENTS ONLY

It is hard to believe, but we are already in our enrollment season! Open Enrollment starts Monday, November 6th and runs through Friday, December 8th. If you have friends, family members, or neighbors who are interested in Glendale Prep please encourage them to apply starting Monday. There is a direct link on our website, GlendalePrep.org. You can also mention our Info Night on November 14th at 6:00PM where they will learn more about our school. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR NEW FAMILIES (and rising 6th graders) ONLY; existing families will participate in re-enrollment in the Spring.

College Counseling

A Practice ACT will be held on Saturday, November 18th, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Glendale Prep. After taking the test, students will receive a score report; a College Counselor will compare their ACT score with their estimated SAT score (derived from your child’s October PSAT score) to help determine if your student has an affinity toward one test over the other (ACT vs. SAT). If you are interested, please sign up HERE. The cost is $10.00. Please bring cash to the practice test on November 18th. The deadline to register is Thursday, November 16th at 5:00 PM.

UPCOMING COLLEGE REP VISITS: We are very fortunate to have college representatives come to GP and talk to our students.  These take place in the library over lunch/lyceum and students can bring their lunch.  The list of visits is on the College Counseling Bulleting Board outside Mrs. Ortiz’s office, please check it weekly and sign up for visits.

  • Arizona Christian University, Thursday, November 9th
  • Grand Canyon University, Thursday, November 16th

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams will take place at Scottsdale Prep in the spring and are open to all high school students who wish to self-study and sit for an exam. Please note that AP exams are not part of our curriculum, nor is there an expectation from colleges that our students report AP scores.

Registration is a two-part process:

1.     Students/parents go to Scottsdale Prep’s Configio to select and pay for exam.

2.     Student logs-in to their College Board account and input the ‘active join code’ found on the Configio site when they paid for the exam.

The cost is $138.00 per exam by March 1st, 2024. Participants should bring non-mechanical number two pencils and a personal calculator to the exam.

Athletics

If you have questions about uploading documents to Big Teams, please reach out to Mr. Roundy (nroundy@glendaleprep.org).

Fall Sports Awards Night: There will be two Fall Sports Awards ceremonies on November 16th: middle school is from 5:30-6:30PM and high school is from 6:30-7:30PM.
