A Note From the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

We have only one week left in this ten-week long quarter. We will soon have fall break followed by the week of parent-teacher conferences. This is a change from last year, but I cannot stress enough how essential it is for teachers, parents, and students to come together early in the semester to consider strengths and areas of needed improvement. This is particularly crucial for high school students as they set goals for the second quarter in preparation for semester exams and final grades that will be posted on their transcript. Given that the conferences will take place prior to a final semester grade, it is essential that students examine their progress and share with you and their teachers about how they can improve in each class. To that end, the nature of conferences is different than last year. Part of teacher evaluations is providing self-reflective questions for students to consider and discuss with you, prior to writing/typing out responses to be presented to the panel of teachers. For middle school students, parents will bring the answers to share with teachers at the conference. All high school students will attend conferences to share their answers directly with teachers. Our hope is that part of the self-examination process will include you, the parents, to help probe your son or daughter to consider the questions thoughtfully with the goal of growth and maturity.I look forward to seeing you at conferences and sitting in to hear students share their answers.

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conference sign-ups were sent via email a few weeks ago. Conferences are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. We have worked diligently to create a conference schedule that allows for all of our teachers’ class schedules. Please do not send requests for conferences via email. If you cannot find your sign-up email, please reach out to Mrs. Hayakawa at shayakawa@glendaleprep.org right away.

At least one parent/guardian of each student is expected to attend parent-teacher conferences. All conferences will be fifteen minutes long. The format will be a round-table discussion including the parent and a panel of the student’s teachers.

  • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students do not attend conferences but will complete a middle school self-assessment in response to questions provided in the evaluation. Parents will bring the self-assessment to the conference.
  • 9th-12th grade students are required to attend and lead their conference. Conversation will be based on a high school self-assessment written in response to questions in the evaluation. Students will bring the self-assessment to the conference.
  • In order to set a collegial tone, 9th-12th grade students should come to the conference dressed professionally or in uniform.

Evaluation Distribution
Glendale Prep and Archway Glendale will be using PowerSchool (PS) for evaluations this school year. In order to access the PS Parent Portal, each parent should set up an account. All of your Glendale Prep and Archway Glendale children may be added to the account you create. You will receive two emails in the near future; one with information on how to set up your account and how to navigate through the portal, and another repeating the information and informing you that the PS Parent Portal is open and ready for you to review your child’s/children’s evaluation(s). The Parent Portal will be opened for evaluation viewing on the evening of Friday, October 18th. Using a new system always has its challenges, and we ask that you be patient in creating the account and learning how to maneuver through the new system. Thank you in advance for your patience and your partnership.

Water Bottles
Previously, the front office has been holding lost water bottles, as they are of significant value, but in recent weeks, there have been too many to manage. Please note that all water bottles will remain in the Lost and Found cart (located in the courtyard) for one week; thereafter, they will be donated. The school recommends that your student has their name clearly labeled, not just marked with stickers. Without a name, your child may be at risk of losing a water bottle of value.

Community Investment
Humane Letters is the capstone course of the Great Hearts high school experience!  Students strive to better understand the world around them through the ideas of those who came before us.  For this reason, Humane Letters is first and foremost a Great Books seminar, in which the reading and Socratic discussion of great works compose the course.

Your Community Investment supports this course and each student’s high school experience.
We are honored to publicly recognize those families and friends who have contributed to this year’s Community Investment campaign. View a listing of donors as of October 3, 2019 here.
