A Note From Headmaster

Hello Parents,

What a beautiful week! I hope you were able to take notice of the colors of the sunrise and sunset; while driving to school coming East on Happy Valley, I was tapping my son to wake up and take a look at the rays shimmering through the clouds. The cold spell brought a new freshness in the air as the chilly wind hit my face while I watched middle school students play on the field before school. Temperature change carries not merely a change in the landscape but a reminder to keep warm and bear in mind our safety precautions. We are blessed to be in school and engage with our students daily. My hope and prayer are we all remain healthy. I leave you with a poem by Robert Frost, titled October.

O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
To-morrow’s wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;
To-morrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow,
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know;
Release one leaf at break of day;
At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away;
Retard the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst.
Slow, slow!
For the grapes’ sake, if they were all,
Whose leaves already are burnt with frost,
Whose clustered fruit must else be lost—
For the grapes’ sake along the wall.

With gratitude,

Mr. Navarrette

Uniform Policy Reminder
Beginning Monday, November 2nd, only pants and skirts may be worn to school. Shorts may not be worn again until after Spring Break. As a reminder, gentlemen may not wear white or ankle socks with pants. “Socks must be dark or tan in color, solid-colored, and free of logos or patterns.” The last day to wear shorts will be Friday, October 30th.

College Counseling

  • JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES:  We are offering a virtual at-home ACT Practice Test on Saturday, November 14th at 8:00 a.m.-noon. The test will be proctored and self-scored through video instruction accessed through your computer. At the completion of self-scoring, students will enter test answers into a Summit Test Prep secured site for a detailed analysis of your test. The College Counseling Department uses this information to help you determine which test (ACT vs. SAT) is better for you to focus on in preparation for college applications. Cost is $10, please make checks out to North Valley Learning, LLC, and bring check directly to the College Counseling Department. Register your participation HERE
  • SENIORS:  Make sure you have completed the FAFSA as soon as possible. Colleges and universities utilize this form to determine financial aid and many require it on file to distribute merit aid scholarships.
  • THE YOUNG LEADERS YOUTH SUMMIT: This virtual event is for students ages 12-18 taking place virtually December 19-23. Click the link for application information.
  • SENIORS, JUNIORS, AND SOPHOMORES: Remember to frequently check the College Counseling Google Classroom for valuable information regarding upcoming events and assignments.

PowerSchool Parent Portal
Please download or print your student’s Quarter 1 evaluations and grades prior to the PowerSchool Parent Portal closing on October 31st. The PowerSchool Parent Portal will reopen at the end of Quarter 2/Semester 1, when grades are ready for parents to view again.

Senior Mini-Retreat
Each year we host two senior retreats and although COVID has created some challenges, we are excited to host an outdoor senior retreat on Friday, November 6th, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. We will have time for recreation, a seminar discussion, and a faculty talk. Breakfast and a mid-morning snack will be provided. That school day is a half-day, and they will be dismissed directly from the retreat at noon.

In order for your student to participate, we need you to complete the permission slip on our portal (https://glendaleprep.configio.com/pd/823/mini-senior-retreat) by today Friday, October 30th. There is no cost to attend. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dean of Students, Mrs. LeTrent at kletrent@glendaleprep.org.

Great Hearts Enrollment
Understanding the enrollment process can be confusing. Below are some details that will help you navigate the process.

  • ROLLOVER for waitlisted families who are not currently attending a Great Hearts school ends November 6th. If a student is not offered a spot for this school year, and the student’s waitlisted application is eligible to rollover to the next school year waitlist, a parent can “rollover” the application for the following school year. This will help them move up the waitlist faster than submitting a new application for 2021-2022. These rollover applications will be ahead of new, incoming, applications. It is crucial that families do not miss the rollover deadline set by the Lead Office and academy to ensure the student’s application is moved to the next year’s waitlist. Also, applications cannot roll over from one school to another school, please note all Archway and Preps are separate schools. Furthermore, applications received after August 15, 2020, for the current school year are NOT eligible to roll over onto the waitlist for the next school year.
  • OPEN ENROLLMENT begins November 9th this is for students who are not current students and do not have an application on the waitlist yet or the application was created after August 15th, 2020. If you have a child that will be starting 6th grade for the 2021-2022 school year, Open Enrollment is when you want to apply. Any application submitted during the open enrollment period is eligible for a lottery. When academies receive more applications than there are seats available, a lottery is held to help order a waitlist and keep the offers given for grade positions fair. Please note siblings and Archway graduates are given a priority. Each year we provide Info Night so potential families can get to know what we do at Great Hearts schools and how our community is different. This year the session will be virtual on November 17th beginning at 6:00 p.m. Share this link with family and friends that are interested in a Great Hearts school.
  • RE-ENROLLMENT begins in March and is for students who currently attend Glendale Prep. Any guardian/parent of a current student who plans to return the following school year at the same academy must fill out re-enrollment paperwork to confirm the student’s intent to return. During the re-enrollment period, a parent/guardian elects “No” and withdraws for the following school year and the academy can offer that position to another student waiting to receive an offer.
