A Note From Headmaster

Hello Parents,

We are reading To Kill a Mockingbird in 8th grade Literature and Composition. If you recall, one of many wonderful and impactful quotes reads like this- “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” My understanding of the significance of this quote may differ from others. I do not see it as an affirmation of some version of moral relativism, where every point of view is true, although some might believe this might be what Atticus is subtly trying to convey to Scout. Rather, I see it as advice to consider what is ultimately necessary to truly understand and love another person. We might tend to assume we know others simply because of what we perceive as their beliefs or values but rarely do people take the time through conversation to grasp the reasoning behind another’s beliefs or values. It is through patience and powerful discussion when the understanding of another’s perspective is discoverable and provides an opportunity to direct another to see the good of an alternate perspective. It is love that drives us to seek the good for another despite disagreement or division. It can be difficult to love; love is selfless and ultimately sacrificial. Every time I read these words from Atticus, I think about my need to grow in patience, so that I can stop, think, and work to really understand a person.

Have a nice weekend,

Mr. Navarrette
