A Note From Headmaster

Greetings Parents,

I am so glad to be back at school to see the teachers and students. It was certainly a bit difficult to wake up earlier than I have for the last two weeks. A number of students shared the same experience with me. Nevertheless, the students have been energized and were engaged in the classes I visited. The teachers were excited to return to teaching again, and the faculty office was abuzz with talks of economics, history, literature, government, and drama with classical music playing lightly in the background.

One important aspect of Glendale Prep culture is making sure the faculty live out what it is to be a “life-long learner” and to engage in meaningful leisure. Every school year, we have a number of faculty seminar days when we enjoy a meal (provided by our wonderful Parent Service Organization) together and discuss a great work. This coming week, faculty will join our own seniors to discuss the Robert Frost poem, The Black Cottage. Please consider reading it; it should only take a few minutes.

I am grateful to serve our community in the coming year.

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette

First Semester Evaluations
Parents, the PowerSchool Portal for grades and evaluations is now open. You can simply click here and login using the User ID and Password you created. If you cannot remember your User ID or Password, it will allow you to make a new one. We find clicking “Teacher Comments” on the left side on a laptop/desktop is the best place to view and print teachers’ comments along with their grades. If you have difficulty logging in, Mrs. Hayakawa is available and happy to assist at shayakawa@glendaleprep.org.

You can print and/or digitally save your child’s evaluation for your own future reference. You will have access to view first semester grades and evaluations until January 24th.

Typing Class
Mr. Oakes will again be offering a typing class to middle school and high school students. The class will provide instruction and guided practice in the home row method. By the end of the course, students will have fully learned the home row method and will have set a foundation for increasing speed and accuracy. The course will especially help students who have little or no experience with typing or who type fewer than twenty-five words per minute. The course will meet each Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.-4:15 p.m. The course will run for ten weeks starting on Tuesday, January 14th. The cost is $50 per student by check; made out to Mr. Oakes. There are twenty-five seats available. Email Mr. Oakes to reserve a seat.

Robotics Competition
Come support the Glendale Prep Robotics Team, Griffin Robotics, at its next competition at Valley Christian High School tomorrow starting at 10:00 a.m. Come see the coding skills of Evan Vo, the driving skills of Alessandro Marcolini, Nate Lowery, and Alex Burton, and all of the hard work put into this year’s robot!

Great Hearts Nurse’s Corner
We would like to introduce you to our wonderful academy nurses across the Great Hearts network. This team supports our scholars and staff with medical needs, and many do many other interesting and important things on our campuses as well. Get to know them by clicking here.

Headmaster Coffee
On Friday, January 24th from 10:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m. Mr. Navarrette welcomes you to join him for coffee, small group discussion, and classroom observations. What makes Glendale Prep such a wonderful community is parent support and commitment to the Academy’s ideals. This is a time to hear from Mr. Navarrette about upcoming events, as well as understand more about specific aspects of school culture. He would also like to discuss any questions you may have about the school. Most importantly, the hope is that this time will provide an opportunity for you to get to know other parents and share your common experiences. Given the timing and space, we are limited to seven parents. Click here to RSVP. Please check-in at the front office.

7th & 8th Grade Dance
Attention 7th and 8th Graders! Get ready to dress up and walk the red carpet as you make your way into the middle school dance. The evening of Friday, January 24th will be full of snacks, music, dancing, and fun. The dance will be held from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.; students will not be admitted after 6:15 p.m. Parents can pay the $15 entrance fee and sign digital permission on the online payment portal until January 23rd.  The entrance fee at the door will be $20 and students must bring a signed permission slip (which can be found at the bottom of the informational flyer). For questions about gentlemen’s attire, please email Mr. Withers (zwithers@glendaleprep.org). For questions about ladies’ attire, please email Mrs. LeTrent (kletrent@glendaleprep.org).

Science Fair
Is your student looking for an excuse to sit in the desert and dig in the dirt for interesting rocks?
Is your student looking for an excuse to mix two chemicals just to see what would happen?

The science fair will be held on the Glendale Campus from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.  Dr. Ustach will be available every other Thursday from 3:20 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. to assist your student with any experiments or ideas.
