A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

Yesterday, we had our House Sorting Assembly. We shortened classes and met as a student body to learn which House would receive the newest members of our community. Here are some words I shared with students, so you can understand the importance of our House system:

“Six years ago when I became Headmaster, my vision was that Glendale Prep would be a place where students are known and loved. With each year, I am blessed to lead our wonderful faculty and staff and to see my favorite students in Arizona. My heart remains steadfast on this goal. When we started our House system, there was a goal that Seniors and 6th graders…Juniors and 8th graders…students across our student body would come to know one another and share time together. It is essential to take time out from the normal school day to be together.

Nothing is more vital to a community than one’s sense of belonging. You belong here at GP, and we love you.”

Have a good weekend,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Turnitin for 9th-12th Grade Students

Parents of 9th-12th grade students received an email Tuesday regarding the use of Turnitin, an online essay submission platform that checks for plagiarism and mistakes in citation. Beginning in Quarter 2, all Humane Letters essay submissions will be through Turnitin. Please direct any questions to Mrs. Kratz (akratz@glendaleprep.org). For additional information regarding Turnitin, visit their website HERE.

In honor of Sandra Day O’Connor Civics Day, on Monday, September 25th, high schoolers will attend a seminar on Mill’s On Liberty and Joint Statement as well as a key note address by Dr. Taliaferro. Middle schoolers will engage in Civics Day in history class.

PowerSchool Parent Portal Access

If you are a returning family for 2023-2024, please make sure you are able to access your PowerSchool parent portal either online HERE or via the app with your username and password before Conference Week/ Fall Break on Friday, September 29th. Note that you will not be able to view grades at this time but should be able to see the Dashboard. Technical support will be only minimally available the first two weeks of October, so please check that you’re able to log in before the break begins.

New families received an email with information on how to create an account on September 12th. If you have a student new to GP this year, please check for this email and be sure you are able to access PowerSchool also by September 29th. Parents will access quarter grades through the PowerSchool portal; please note that this is different from how you accessed the Mid-Quarter Progress Reports, which were sent last week via email as a pdf attachment. If you are a new family and did not receive an email on how to access the PowerSchool parent portal, contact Mrs. Kimpel.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Section-level conference sign-ups were emailed to families on Thursday, September 7th. Make sure to sign up for a time to meet with your child’s teacher during their scheduled day during Conference week. Please reach out to Mrs. McHale if you did not receive this email, or if your email did not match your student’s Humane Letters (HS) teacher. Be sure to include your child’s name and either section (MS) or Humane Letters teacher (HS) so she can send you the correct sign-up link.

Anticipated Extended absences

There are times when parents plan extended absences for students due to family travel or vacations. According to the GP Family Handbook, “absences due to vacations will be considered unexcused absences and missed work will not be provided either prior to or after a student’s return.” For clarification, this means that teachers are not required to assemble or disseminate homework to students during the course of the unexcused absences. It is the student’s responsibility to utilize his or her homework buddy to ascertain homework and complete all work during the absence.

For planned absences, parents should email all teachers in one email sharing the dates of the extended absence and noting that their child plans to connect with each teacher before the extended absence; parents should copy Mrs. Kratz and Mrs. Sarbacker to this email. While teachers may choose to provide some of the work a student can complete while away, daily plans can adjust for teachers depending upon class progress and student understanding. Students must check in with their study buddy to ensure they gather all missing materials and necessary homework. Lastly, students should also anticipate meeting with teachers in tutoring upon their return to ensure all necessary make-up work is completed.

Anton Uniforms Winter Sale

Anton Uniforms is having its winter sale until Friday, September 29th. Enjoy a 10% discount on all sweaters, jackets, and long sleeve polos with code “OUTER10.” Please note that the Unisex Full Zip Athletic Lightweight Jacket is for outdoor wear only. Be sure to read the attachment HERE for details.

Frayed and Worn Sweaters

The Deans are seeing more frayed and worn sweaters, which lead to uniform infractions. Consider attending the PSO used uniform event this Saturday to find some replacement items. Please see Wednesday’s PSO Blast for detailed information.

College Counseling

PSAT Practice Test: To best prepare students for the official PSAT (Sophomores, Oct. 24, Juniors Oct. 25) we are strongly encouraging sophomores and juniors to take a practice digital test as this is a new format for our students.  Practice PSAT tests will be offered on the following dates:

  • JUNIORS:  Wednesday, September 27th from 1:00-3:45pm
  • SOPHOMORES: Wednesday, October 18th from 1:00-3:45pm

We recommend that students bring their personal laptop for both the practice session and the official test day. If your student is unable to bring a personal device, school issued computers will be available for both the practice sessions and the official test days.

Official PSAT: Sophomores will take the PSAT on Oct. 24 and Juniors on Oct. 25. If you have a conflict with your respective date, please stop in Mrs. Ortiz’s office.  If students would like to prepare for this test, one option is to log in or create a College Board account and download the Bluebook App to access practice tests.

UPCOMING COLLEGE REP VISITS: We are very fortunate to have college representatives come to GP and talk to our students.  These take place in the library over lunch/lyceum and students can bring their lunch.  The list of visits is on the College Counseling Bulleting Board outside Mrs. Ortiz’s office, please check it weekly and sign up for visits.

  • Arizona Christian University, Tuesday, September 26
  • University of Dallas, Thursday, September 28
  • Baylor University, Monday, October 16
  • Kenyon College, Monday, October 16
  • Binghamton University, Tuesday, October 17
  • Willamette University, Friday, October 27

WRITING WORKSHOPS will continue to be held every Wednesday from 1:00-4:00pm in room 201. This is a time for seniors to continue to work on their essays and personal statements and get feedback from Mrs. Ortiz and Mrs. Smith.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exam will take place at Scottsdale Prep in the spring and are open to all high school students who wish to self-study and sit for an exam. Please note that AP exams are not part of our curriculum, nor is there an expectation from colleges that our students report AP scores.

Registration is a two-part process:

1.       Students/parents go to Configio to select and pay for exam.

2.       Student logs-in to their College Board account and input the ‘active join code’ found on the Configio site when they paid for the exam.

The cost is $98.00 per exam by November 1st, 2023 and $138.00 per exam for late registration by March 1st, 2024. Participants should bring non-mechanical no. 2 pencils and a personal calculator to the exam.
