A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

We are two weeks away from Conferences and Fall Break. During this time, I would ask that you consider providing feedback on Quarter 1, if necessary. Reflection and improvement are my goals. I wanted to remind you of the point person based on his or her roles to whom you can send your thoughts and insights. Please see the list below-

  1. As always, please reach out to teachers directly with questions regarding specific classes.
  2. Mr. Kontak- Athletics
  3. Mrs. Kimpel- Parent communication, enrollment, and school website
  4. Mrs. Kempton- Community investment and tax credit
  5. Mrs. Kratz and Ms. Poore- Academics
  6. Mrs. Mure, Mr. Hayward, and Mrs. Bookhout- Culture and discipline
  7. Mrs. Mooberry- Calendar, safety, and campus operations
  8. Mrs. Janssen- ESS
  9. Mrs. Sarbacker- Faculty oversight and college counseling, along with Mrs. Ortiz
  10. Mrs. Ortiz- College counseling
  11. Mr. Navarrette- Vision for school; philosophy of education and culture; ways to improve our community; parent partnership; whatever is on your mind or if you do not know the right person to contact

Again, there is no obligation, but one goal I am setting is ensuring that we are building trust and opening lines of communication with specific persons in various lanes, so please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us.

Have a good weekend,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

PowerSchool Parent Portal Access

If you are a returning family for 2023-2024, please make sure you are able to access your PowerSchool parent portal either online HERE or via the app with your username and password before Conference Week/ Fall Break on Friday, September 29th. Note that you will not be able to view grades at this time but should be able to see the Dashboard. Technical support will be only minimally available the first two weeks of October, so please check that you’re able to log in before the break begins.

New families received an email with information on how to create an account on September 12th. If you have a student new to GP this year, please check for this email and be sure you are able to access PowerSchool also by September 29th. Parents will access quarter grades through the PowerSchool portal; please note that this is different from how you accessed the Mid-Quarter Progress Reports, which were sent last week via email as a pdf attachment. If you are a new family and did not receive an email on how to access the PowerSchool parent portal, contact Mrs. Kimpel.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Section-level conference sign-ups were emailed to families on Thursday, September 7th. Make sure to sign up for a time to meet with your child’s teacher during their scheduled day during Conference week. Please reach out to Mrs. McHale if you did not receive this email, or if your email did not match your student’s Humane Letters (HS) teacher. Be sure to include your child’s name and either section (MS) or Humane Letters teacher (HS) so she can send you the correct sign-up link.

Anticipated Extended absences

There are times when parents plan extended absences for students due to family travel or vacations. According to the GP Family Handbook, “absences due to vacations will be considered unexcused absences and missed work will not be provided either prior to or after a student’s return.” For clarification, this means that teachers are not required to assemble or disseminate homework to students during the course of the unexcused absences. It is the student’s responsibility to utilize his or her homework buddy to ascertain homework and complete all work during the absence.

For planned absences, parents should email all teachers in one email sharing the dates of the extended absence and noting that their child plans to connect with each teacher before the extended absence; parents should copy Mrs. Kratz and Mrs. Sarbacker to this email. While teachers may choose to provide some of the work a student can complete while away, daily plans can adjust for teachers depending upon class progress and student understanding. Students must check in with their study buddy to ensure they gather all missing materials and necessary homework. Lastly, students should also anticipate meeting with teachers in tutoring upon their return to ensure all necessary make-up work is completed.

Senior Trip Fundraising Opportunity

The Becks and Tyr Tactical have provided a wonderful fundraising opportunity for our Seniors going on Senior Trip. Up to 15 Senior students can earn $25 per hour working at Tyr Tactical from 8:00am-noon on three designated Saturdays. Seniors need to submit a signed release to Mrs. Sarbacker before their first shift. Please see Monday’s email for the form, link, and details.
