A Note from the Headmaster

Hello,

The last few weeks have been packed with Fall sports events! We had our 14th annual Blue and Gold Classic with nearly 200 participants; in their first meet, our teams finished 5th and 6th, just behind 5A and 6A schools. Last week, we had our first home football game under the lights with nearly 800 fans in attendance, cheering to the calls of our Spirit line (we had a helicopter, by the way); finally, over 200 fans witnessed our varsity volleyball team nearly pull off an amazing comeback. Of our 661 students, 244 are participating in a Fall sport. I am so grateful for Mr. Kontak, Mr. Roundy, Mr. Kontak Sr., the APO, and dozens of coaches who serve after hours to make the student-athlete experience at Glendale Prep so special.

Here is an article in case you missed last Friday’s football game.

Enjoy the weekend,

Mr. Navarrette

Athletic Eligibility

GP Athletics is continuously striving for excellence in all we do. As a student-athlete, it is important that you feel both supported and encouraged as a student first. Success in the classroom is not easily achieved; it requires effort and discipline on all levels. This year, GP Athletics will continue the grade and eligibility process. Please click HERE and save a copy to easily access this information for the remainder of the season. Mr. Kontak and the coaching staff will inform families of all eligibility decisions and disciplines.

Family Giving

Next week at Glendale Prep we are rallying our community in unity to support your student’s classical liberal arts education! This is made possible by parents and community members like you who unify us by giving to our Community Investment campaign each year. We are committed to teaching our students to live a life full of truth, beauty, and goodness. As a not-for-profit public, charter school, we receive less funding from the state each year than public district schools in our area. Thank you to every family in our community who has already partnered with us to provide the important work being done in your student’s classroom each day. Any monthly gift to Community Investment is appreciated, whether it’s $50 a month or $125 a month. Are you willing to give up one dinner out each month to support our school? Let’s rally Unity in our Community with gifts to Community Investment and grow a beautiful culture of generosity for our children together. Use this link to set up your monthly or one-time gift to Community Investment Donate to Glendale Preparatory Community Investment. Please reach out to Tammy Kempton with any questions at tkempton@glendaleprep.org or 623-889-0822 ext. 1502.

Culture

  • With the upcoming presidential election quickly approaching, here are a few guidelines about how to navigate these types of discussions at Glendale Prep.
    • Students should show profound respect and tolerance for the religious, political, and cultural traditions and perspectives of others.
    • Students must encourage a civil and tolerant discussion of ideas when such topics naturally arise in class or on campus.
    • Discussion of contemporary politics and global affairs is not a part of the Academy’s curriculum, and opinions about such issues are kept out of the classroom.
  • Here’s a quick reminder about our cell phone policy on campus.
    • A student should keep a cell phone turned off (not merely silenced, but off) and cell phones must be stored in their locker during the school day. Cell phones may not be brought in pockets or purses into classrooms.
    • Cell phone use is permitted on campus after school but only in the school office area or outside the building only for the purpose of contacting a ride.

College Counseling

The Barrett honors application is now open. The College Counseling team will conduct an ASU Barrett application walk-through for students interested in the support. The workshop will be held after school on Wednesday, September 11th, from 1 PM until 2 PM. If interested, please sign up on the bulletin board outside the College Counseling office.

College Counseling Parent Nights: The College Counseling department hosts a night each fall for students and parents where they can learn more about the college application process as it relates to students in each specific year of high school.

Sophomores – Tuesday, September 10th – 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the MPR

Freshmen – Tuesday, September 17th – 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the MPR

September College Rep Visits: Throughout the year we host college admissions representatives from many colleges and universities. These visits are held during lunch and lyceum in Room 706 and 9th-12th grade students who are interested in learning more about these schools are invited to attend. This is a great opportunity to meet the admissions representative from schools where your student may wish to apply. Often these representatives conduct the first read of our students’ applications so having a personal interaction before submitting an application is beneficial. Please have your child sign up on the sheet posted on the College Counseling bulletin board. Our upcoming visits are:

  • Simmons University Monday, September 16th, 2024 – 12:15 PM-1:00 PM
  • Soka University of America Tuesday, September 17th, 2024 – 12:15 PM-1:00 PM
  • Sarah Lawrence College Thursday, September 19th, 2024 – 12:15 PM-1:00 PM
  • Seton Hall University Friday, September 20th, 2024 – 12:15 PM-1:00 PM
  • University of Dallas Tuesday, September 24th, 2024 – 12:15 PM-1:00 PM

COLLEGE APPLICATION PERSONAL STATEMENT TIMELINE:

  • September 18th – A revised draft is due if you have a personal statement and/or writing supplements that have yet to be approved.
  • October 2nd – The final draft of your personal statement is due. Parents will be notified of the missing final draft if it is not submitted or if this is the first time you have submitted a personal statement draft to college counseling.
  • October 16th – All final drafts for personal statements and writing supplements with November 1st deadlines are due.

Personal Statement Workshops: Students are encouraged to attend these workshops to get support on their personal statements and supplemental essays. Workshop dates are posted on the college counseling bulletin board.

AP TEST PREP: There is an AP Exam PREP interest list outside of the college counseling office for juniors and seniors interested in taking the AP Calculus AB Exam. Please sign up if you are interested so we can confirm if there are enough committed students to offer this as a resource for AP Calculus preparation.

Athletics

Game Volunteers: We are always in need of parent volunteers to help run home games. Concession stand, entrance, and other volunteers help our events run smoothly. If interested, email gp_APO@glendalepreppo.org to join or learn more! You can also reach out to athletics@glendaleprep.org.
