A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

This past Tuesday was New Parent Orientation, an event to share information and start building a relationship with families new to Glendale Prep. Parents go around to various ten minute stations to learn about the ins and outs of GP. I opened the event asking for trust, just like I ask for your trust each and every day.  Trust is the foundation of every relationship.

I summarized how we want parents to:

  • Trust us to know their child and love their child.
  • Trust us to make decisions that may require parents to do some work at home; parents are still the most important person in their child’s life.
  • Trust us to make calls in the area of moral character that are for a child’s good. This is not to suggest that we believe we always know best, as much as highlighting that our focus is on the heart, ultimately, and not the intellect.
  • Trust us enough to follow a process of problem solving and conflict resolution. Please know that it is essential to bring questions and concerns directly to teachers. It is good for teachers to hear from parents and partner with them.
  • Lastly, trust us, knowing we are not perfect. We will make mistakes and need grace.

Parents, thank you for your trust. I know you might not always agree with decisions or may even become frustrated with aspects of the school or even personally with me. Know our heart is to serve and do what we believe is good for each student. My goal is to honor your choice of GP and strengthen the trust we have in our community. I am grateful for all of you and each of your children.

Enjoy the weekend,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Spring Concert

Remember that the Prep School Winter Concerts are on the evening of Wednesday, May 3rd at Haven Church in Glendale (5902 W Cactus Rd, Glendale, AZ 85304). All grade 7, 8, 9, and 10 students in Music class are required to perform that evening, and will be joined by all of our extracurricular choirs (Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Bella Voce, Men’s Choir, and Middle School Choir) and by Jazz Band and Orchestra. If your students are participating in the concert, they will receive detailed information from their teacher/director about the concert, but we also encourage all students and families to come to hear these fine performers share their musical gifts with you.

There are two separate concerts on May 3rd. The Middle School (recorders, choir, bands) concert begins at 5:30 pm and the High School (choirs, band, and orchestra) concert begins at 7:00 pm. Students must provide their own transportation the evening of the concert. The various students must arrive at the church by the following times, to sign in and have their concert dress approved. Failure to report at or before the correct time will result in a deduction of grade:

4:30 PM         All Middle School performers
6:00 PM         High School Concert Choir, Bella Voce, and Men’s Choir performers
6:30 PM         High School MUS 9 and MUS 10 students

Rehearsal for the concert will take place during the school day on Tuesday, May 2nd. Students will be transported to and from Glendale Prep by bus for the rehearsal at Haven Church when they are needed there for rehearsal.

NOTE: Students in the extracurricular choirs may be given specific dress instructions that differ from the following guidelines.

Concert attire for MIDDLE-school boys is Black and White, as follows:

-White long-sleeved collared dress shirt and black dress slacks
-Long black necktie (bowties are not allowed)
-Black belt, black socks, and dress shoes (sneakers are not dress shoes)
No denim, external pockets, patterned tops, or any other deviation from the concert attire allowed.

Concert attire for MIDDLE-school girls is Black and White, as follows:

-A white blouse with solid black dress slacks or black skirt. If a girl would like to wear a black dress, she must cover the top of the dress with a white blouse or white cardigan so that the look is consistent with the uniform of a white blouse with black skirt/pants. Sleeves for blouses or dresses must be cap-sleeve or longer, and skirts or dresses must not be shorter than the knee.
-Black dress shoes (Open-toed dress shoes are permitted, but flip-flops, sneakers, or boots are not allowed.) Heels of any kind must be very low.
-Solid black tights beneath skirts are permitted. Leggings or yoga pants are not a substitute for dress slacks.
-Nail polish and make-up must follow dress code guidelines.
No denim, external pockets on pants, patterned tops, or any other deviation from the concert attire code allowed.

Concert attire for HIGH-school students:

Concert attire for high school is ALL BLACK for both boys and girls, as follows:

BOYS will wear black long-sleeved collared dress shirts with black slacks, black belt, black dress shoes, and no tie. Sneakers are not dress shoes.

GIRLS will wear a black dress, or a black blouse with black skirt or black dress slacks, and black dress shoes (open-toed dress shoes are permitted, but flip-flops, sneakers, or boots will not be allowed). Heels of any kind must be very low.

Ladies’ concert clothing and make-up must follow the dress code in the family handbook. Skirts and dresses must reach to the middle of the knee or lower.

Attire must be professional, modest, and follow Glendale Prep dress code guidelines.

If you have questions, please contact your child’s music teacher.

Anton Uniform Sale

We are excited to announce that Anton Uniforms will have a sale on all purchases made between April 14th and May 13th, 2023. During this time, families will receive a 10% discount on their order by entering the coupon code 10OFF when shopping online, or by mentioning the code to the associates in-store. This is a great opportunity to stock up on school uniforms at current lower prices before they’re adjusted to reflect recent supplier price increases which begin on June 1st, 2023.

Anton understands that buying uniforms in advance can be a challenge, especially since children grow at different rates. The goal is to always provide a comfortable and well-fitting uniform, so they happily offer exchanges for up to two weeks after the start of the 2023-24 school year.

Yearbook: Deadline for Orders

The final deadline for ALL yearbook orders is TOMORROW! Ensure that your child will receive one of these coveted books with his or her name embossed in gold foil by ordering one now. Yearbooks are $50 and $56 with the gold foil personalization HERE.

Please note that we will not be providing photographs of this event.

8th Grade Dinner:  The Hamberlin family has graciously offered to host this special event on Friday, May 12th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and are asking that all students RSVP HERE by Wednesday, April 19ththrough the GP Parent Portal. Information regarding the location will be emailed on May 8th to all who RSVP’d. Please see the email from Katie Hamberlin Monday, April 10th on how to contribute to the event and how to provide pictures of your 8th grader to Becky Brown by April 24th for the slide show.

Please see the GP email that went to all 8th grade families yesterday for details  and information on dress code. Note that it is the responsibility of the student and parents to ensure the dress code is followed for 8th Grade Promotion and 8th Grade Dinner. Any student not adhering to the dress code will be denied the privilege of participating in that event.

We look forward to honoring our 8th graders!

Standardized Testing

Standardized testing runs through Friday, April 28th. While we understand there are illness and appointments that arise, we appreciate your help in making sure your student is present during testing times as much as possible. We will have an adjusted schedule for the entire month of April due to standardized testing; the class schedule is included in the chart below. We are trying to schedule all of the testing in the morning, so our hope is that if you have to schedule your student for an appointment, you will schedule it around the tests. If a student leaves campus during a test, they will have to submit the unfinished test and will not be able to complete the test.Testing will be administered by grade level. Most make up testing will be conducted on Wednesdays, but we may have students make up tests during other days as there is limited space in the makeup testing room. Testing will be administered by grade level; make up testing will be conducted on Wednesdays. All testing will be during the first two periods of each day. With students’ growth we are seeing a lot of short skirts and short pants. As a reminder, girls’ skirts should be no shorter than two inches above the knee. Please consider lowering your child’s hem if it is too short. Also, remember that our dress code specifies that socks must not contain any kind of logo.

Please make sure that your son’s hair cut follows our handbook guidelines: Hair must not touch the collar, may only be mid-way over the ears and must be above the eyebrows. Also, girls’ nails should extend only just beyond the fingertip (no longer) in only pink, red, and French tip. White, sparkles, and other variations are not allowed.

Parents are invited to attend. Thesis panels will be at 3:30 (1:20 on Wednesdays) in the GP Library or at 3:45 (1:35 Wednesdays) in room 408. All panels last 60 minutes.
