A Note from the Headmaster
Hello Parents, I apologize about using a sports analogy, but as a coach I find they can be helpful when thinking about life. Something I have been pondering lately is a shift in the cultural landscape of basketball. What was once a focus on the glory of execution, self-sacrifice, and team success has now become a focus on individual flashiness, show-boating, self-serving antics, and feeding ego. I have seen this shift in youth sports, middle and high school, college, and at the professional level as well. Highlights on the screens showcase how one player can dominate or embarrass another; and then the audience or crowd is eager to see what the player will do after the moment of success (tap head, shoot a fake gun at the opponent’s head, hold hand to the ground to indicate- “too small”) and the list goes on. As a high school coach, I am seeing this aspect of basketball culture (the focus on self-glory and individual bragging rights) leveraged to squeeze out a bit more intensity, energy, and fight from a player or to simply win a game. Do not get me wrong; student-athletes absolutely should compete to win, but the goal has shifted. I want our young men and women to strive for greatness for the sake of the glory of others, their teammates, the tradition of their school, and to display excellence and beauty for its own sake. I do not want our student-athletes to take ultimate pride in how they played individually and if at the end of the day, they care more about if they were embarrassed or showed up the opponent. As I shared with a fellow coach this week- True greatness does not have to do anything extra or bring special attention to oneself; the crowd will cheer when they see effort, beauty, and excellence. A desire for anything more could mean the focus has shifted to prioritizing self-glory, which in the end might bring praise from the crowd for a time, but will end up being futile and empty years down the road. Enjoy the three day weekend, Anton Uniform Sale We are excited to announce that Anton Uniforms will have a sale on all purchases made between April 14th and May 13th, 2023. During this time, families will receive a 10% discount on their order by entering the coupon code 10OFF when shopping online, or by mentioning the code to our associates in-store. This is a great opportunity to stock up on school uniforms at current lower prices before they’re adjusted to reflect recent supplier price increases which begin on June 1st, 2023. Anton understands that buying uniforms in advance can be a challenge, especially since children grow at different rates. The goal is to always provide a comfortable and well-fitting uniform, so we happily offer exchanges for up to two weeks after the start of the 2023-24 school year. While we understand there are illness and appointments that arise, we appreciate your help in making sure your student is present during testing times as much as possible. We will have an adjusted schedule for the entire month of April due to standardized testing; the class schedule is included in the chart below. We are trying to schedule all of the testing in the morning, so our hope is that if you have to schedule your student for an appointment, you will schedule it around the tests. If a student leaves campus during a test, they will have to submit the unfinished test and will not be able to complete the test. Testing will be administered by grade level; make up testing will be conducted on Wednesdays. All testing will be during the first two periods of each day.
