A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

Since this is the last blast of the Quarter, I want to pack in as many topics as possible. Thank you in advance for your patience.

First, I want to update you on the special time our Seniors are spending in Washington D.C. They arrived on Sunday and will return this Saturday. While the trip is certainly educational, this tradition provides a time away from the classroom to simply be together and make memories. I have teachers sending me pictures of the food, which is what I love most about this trip.

Parents, thank you for completing the school survey. Your feedback is always helpful for us to gain perspective and consider changes we need to make.

Finally, I wanted to update all families on a unique survey that was completed by 8th, 9th, and 12th grade students and their parents. This survey had a unique title: Retention. It is no surprise that as a school of choice, we have parents who choose Glendale Prep through graduation, and others who change their choice at different times in their child’s educational journey. We believe there is a principle of good retention and concerning retention when looking at the data. While I can see the benefit of students remaining in our community through 12th grade, I will always affirm a parent’s right to choose what he/she thinks is best for their child. Thoughts and perspectives from parents who stay and parents who leave are always revelatory and helpful to remind us of the foundational principles that make our community distinct. The results of surveys like this can highlight an opportunity to consider who we are and what we care about most. Here are some highlights from the retention survey-

  1. Students and parents acknowledge that each student has at least one friend at school.
  2. Students would prefer to not wear uniforms.
  3. Students would prefer to have access to their cellphones, while parents support no access to cell-phones during the school day.
  4. Students and parents acknowledge that students are not always kind.

There are some network level considerations based on the survey that various teams will be meeting to discuss which fall into the broad areas of Athletics, Academics, Facilities, and Culture.

If you are wondering my thoughts on the survey…I can share that the results, for the most part, were not surprising, and many were anticipated. However, the results regarding the student experience when it comes to friendships, sense of belonging, relationships with teachers, and kindness call into question the effect of my vision for Glendale Prep to be a place where students are known and loved. My and my team’s focus in response to these results is to discuss ways we can strengthen our community for next year.

I hope you and the family have a wonderful spring break.

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Standardized Testing

Standardized testing runs through Friday, April 28th. While we understand there are illness and appointments arise, we appreciate your help in making sure your student is present during testing times as much as possible. We will have an adjusted schedule for the entire month of April due to standardize testing. We will send a schedule for the month as well as weekly updates. Testing will be administered by grade level; make up testing will be conducted on Wednesdays. All testing will be during the first two periods of each day. Please see the chart below for details:

Griffin Players Presents Harvey

Join the Griffin Players for their spring production, Harvey. In this Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy, Elwood insists on including his friend Harvey in all his sister’s social gatherings. The only trouble is, Harvey is an imaginary six-and-a-half-foot-tall rabbit. And when his sister tries to do something about it, hilarity ensues.

Everyone is invited to attend a stand-alone performance of this show on Friday, March 31st at 7:30 pm, and adults can enjoy the performance as part of the Dinner and the Arts event (see below). Tickets for the stand-alone performance on Friday, March 31st are $10 for students and $15 for all others and can be purchased HERE or at the door.

Dinner and the Arts

We are honored and excited to host Glendale Prep’s second annual Dinner and the Arts event on Saturday, April 1st. We will showcase the many artistic and musical talents of GP students. Please come in semi-professional attire and enjoy mingling with other parents and teachers, a catered meal, and a special performance of Harvey put on by our own Griffin Players. We are eager for you to see these wonderful scholars present and perform. We look forward to spending time with you!

This event is NOT a fundraiser and is exclusively for Glendale Prep parents. Tickets are limited and prices will increase as we get closer to the event, so be sure to purchase your tickets early!

  • EARLY BIRD pricing now through March 10th – $60
  • March 11th-25th- $75
  • March 25th- April 1st- $100

Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door for $125 CASH ONLY. All tickets are sold based on availability. Please purchase tickets HERE.

Junior & Senior Promenade

The 2023 Junior & Senior Promenade is coming up on Saturday, May 6th at Blackstone Country club.

Official invitation and details to come, but for now the question is…

What should you wear?

DRESS CODE  This is a black tie event, requiring black tie attire.

Ladies:

·       Tea-length (mid-calf) or full-length gowns

·       Thin-strap, spaghetti-strap, single shoulder, and strapless gowns are permitted; however, gowns should not be ‘revealing’ or low-cut. In front, gowns must be modest and tasteful (best practice: no lower than four closed-fingers below the collarbone); in back, gown must be no lower than the standard bra line.

·       Bare midriffs, bare backs (below the bottom of the standard bra line), and any other “holes” in the gown are not permitted. Sheer or “see-through” fabric over any part of the body required to be covered (midriff, lower back, etc.) is not permitted.  Dress slits should be modest and reveal no more than four closed fingers above the knee.

·       Dress shoes are required and must remain on the feet the entire evening.

·       Manicures that do not conform to GP Student Handbook regulations may be worn the week of Prom and must be removed within a week after prom.

·       All dresses will need to be approved no later than Monday, May 1st.  The ladies approval link can be found HERE.

·       If you arrive at the prom in a dress that has not been approved, you will be offered a cover-up or turned away at the door.

Gentlemen:

  • A formal tuxedo – i.e., “black tie attire” – is very strongly encouraged; dark suits are acceptable only if absolutely necessary (see below for guidelines on suits).
  • “White tie attire” (even more formal than black tie – involving a black tailcoat, black pants, white waistcoat, and white tie) is also strongly encouraged.
  • No colored tuxedos allowed – black is the only acceptable color.
  • Ties, vests, and cummerbunds (if worn) may be colored, if desired.
  • Dress shoes are required and must remain on the feet the entire evening.

A Note on Wearing Suits Instead of a Tuxedo:

The evening is a formal event, and your attire should reflect this.

  • Suits are acceptable if tasteful in color choice (dark-color preferred) and fit “black tie” occasion standards.
  • Suits must be properly-fitting.
  • Pants and coat must match.
  • White dress shirt and tasteful tie are required.
  • If you are wearing a suit instead of a tuxedo, your suit will need to be approved no later than Monday, May 1st.  The gentlemen approval link can be found HERE.

You do NOT need approval if you are wearing a tuxedo.

  • If you arrive at the prom in a suit that has not been approved, you will be turned away at the door.

Invitations, dance lesson requirements, and other sign-up/ payment information coming after spring break!

Dress Code Reminders

Spring break is a great time to relax and get ready for a new quarter, and also provides and opportunity to check your child’s uniform for fit and compliance. With students’ growth we are seeing a lot of short skirts and short pants. As a reminder, girls’ skirts should be no shorter than two inches above the knee. Shorts are permitted after spring break. Shorts must be worn with a belt and be approaching the knee in length.

Please make sure that your son’s hair cut follows our handbook guidelines: Hair must not touch the collar, may only be mid-way over the ears and must be above the eyebrows. Also, girls’ nails should extend only just beyond the fingertip (no longer) in only pink, red, and French tip. White, sparkles, and other variations are not allowed.

Thank you for your help and diligence with this. We’re excited for spring break and a strong finish!
