A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

Our community is built on trust. I believe one way trust is built is through timely and caring communication. It can be difficult for me to gather a sense of how you as parents feel regarding communication from teachers, staff, administration, front office, and me. I want to know if an email from me did not sit well with you. I want to know if you emailed a teacher and did not receive a reply. The parent surveys at the end of the year  initiated by our network give me a broad picture but not specifics. I believe our parents are considerate and patient, not wanting to bother given the understood workload of our teacher.

However, I want you to believe you can reach out to anyone, at any time, to ask a question or share a concern, and then receive a reply within 24-business hours that shows we love and care about you and your child. If that is not happening; if we are not communicating in such a way that builds trust, I would like to know. One consideration is a survey that comes directly from the school where you would identify teachers, staff, administration, etc. to provide a rating scale. For now, I would love you to email me feedback directly about your experience regarding communication from administration, front office, athletics, teachers, and from me. We want to know where we are doing a great job and where we can improve. Please email me directly at knavarrette@glendaleprep.org. If a phone call or meeting is preferred because there is context or nuance you want to convey, please send me some available days and times to call.

Thank you for your partnership.
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Field Day: February 14th

As a reminder, Field Day is Wednesday, February 14th. We’ve combined the best of both athletic and academic games to yield a day of fun, House spirit, and teamwork! Field Day attendance is required, just as it would be on any regular early release day.

1. What to Wear

Students must wear:

  • Glendale Prep House T-shirts (encouraged and preferred)!
  • GP polo/oxford
  • T-Shirt in House color
  • Clothing may display small athletic team logos (professional or collegiate) or athletic brand names (e.g. Adidas).
  • Athletic pants, leggings, yoga pants, or sweatpants/joggers; athletic shorts must either be mid-thigh or be paired over other pants/shorts reaching to at least mid-thigh.
  • Athletic footwear

Prohibited items:

  • No spandex or bike shorts alone
  • No short shorts. Again, shorts must reach the mid- thigh when jumping or reaching for a ball.
  • No jeans.
  • No clothing displaying pop culture images or inappropriate images or messages.
  • No crop tops, tank tops, spaghetti strap tops, shirts that expose the stomach when arms are raised (as to catch things in the air), or sleeveless shirts.
  • No dress shoes, flip flops, clogs, slides, crocs, slippers, or sandals.
  • No shirts that have been cut, ripped, or have holes.

2. What to bring

  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen (highly encouraged)
  • Baseball cap/visor may be worn outside only
  • Optional: sunglasses
  • Do not bring textbooks or homework. Homework assigned Tuesday will be due Thursday.

3. When and where

  • Wednesday is a mandatory school day, 8:05AM-12:15PM.
  • Students should arrive by 8:00AM and report directly to their kin classrooms.

**Please be aware there is a possibility that Field Day will need to be rescheduled, likely to February 21st, if the field is still flooded from this week’s rain.

Field Day Scheduling

We are excited that Field Day is coming on Wednesday, February 14th! Please remember that students will not be in normal classes this day and it will take longer for the front office to locate your student if he or she needs to leave early. Please schedule appointments around Field Day if possible, or plan plenty of extra time if picking up your student during the school day is unavoidable.

Senior Trip Meeting

The Senior Trip to Washington D.C. is only three weeks away! The next information meeting for parents and enrolled senior students will be on Thursday, February 15th at 5:45 pm in room 706-707.

Please enter through the Gym doors. We are looking forward to seeing you all.

For any information, please contact Madame Cognet-Pereira: ccognet-pereira@glendaleprep.org.

Re-Enrollment: COMING SOON

Secure your student’s spot for the 2024-2025 school year beginning March 4th by completing the re-enrollment packet on the Enrollment Portal (you will receive an email when re-enrollment is live) and bringing in all the required items during one of our available slots HERE. Slots are broken down for families with just Archway students, just Prep students, and for families with both Archway and Prep students. Please sign up for only ONE time slot PER FAMILY!

THIS PROCESS IS QUICK AND EASY! Simply print out the re-enrollment packet one-sided, and bring it to the GP gym lobby during your scheduled time slot. You will also need to bring in one Arizona Residency Document (we prefer a driver’s license or utility bill with your current address). The document you provide must list the physical address where the student resides and should match the address in the re-enrollment packet. NEW THIS YEAR: The document MUST list the name of the person who signed the AZ Residency Form in the re-enrollment packet.

Re-enrollment materials will not be accepted or marked complete if any of the required materials are missing.

We look forward to seeing you at re-enrollment!

Robotics Takes First Place; Heads to State

Both GP Robotics Teams, Metal Masters and Unscheduled Disassembly, competed at the American Leadership Academy near Queen Creek this past weekend in their final regular season tournament.  Despite some early troubles, they took fourth and eleventh place respectively during the qualifying matches against 34 other teams, winning a majority of their matches, and Metal Masters became one of the final alliance captains. As they had practiced frequently together, Metal Masters picked Unscheduled Disassembly to form an alliance in the final knockout rounds. They won all four of their finals matches, taking 1st place in the tournament, despite going up against the state record holding first and second place teams. They will be competing in the state tournament at Brophy Prep on February 17th from 10:00AM to 5:00PM, and could use any support as the teams try their shot at going to Worlds for the first time! The competition is free and open to the public.

Middle School Epic Cycle: The Death of Baldr

Join us Friday, March 1st from 7:00 to 10:00 PM, for a night of games, music, and epic storytelling! All middle school students are invited to attend. Snacks will be provided, and students are encouraged to bring their favorite board games to enjoy with friends and teachers. The highlight of our evening will be a theatrical retelling of The Death of Baldr, a beloved Norse myth.

Tickets are available on the payment portal HERE for $15 through February 23rd and $20 thereafter through 5:00 pm the day of the event. Tickets are $30 CASH ONLY at the door and parents will need to sign a paper permission form in person before student entry to the epic cycle for those who did not pay on the portal.

Dress Code: This is not a uniformed event. Coverage should be the same as the standard middle school uniform and in accordance with Non-Uniform Dress Code for Special Events on page 51 of the Family Handbook. No large distracting logos. Students are encouraged to dress warmly, and to wear gym-appropriate athletic shoes. House shirts are also recommended!

Cell phones must be brought in a zip-top baggy clearly labeled with the student’s name.

Students must be picked up from the event by 10:15 PM.

Please email Mr. Kilcup at mkilcup@glendaleprep.org with questions.

8th Grade Dinner SAVE THE DATE

Students Collect Flags

Did you know that we have a couple of students collecting old and retired national flags so that they can donate the grommets to the Arizona Sons of the American Legion? The grommets will be carefully removed, and the flags will be disposed of properly. The grommets will be melted with tin and Arizona copper to cast the 3 bells for the US Navy to select from for the official bell of the new USS Arizona set to launch in 2025. This is the first time a vessel has held the name since 1941! We are excited to help in this small piece of AZ History. They are even planning to submit our school’s name to be engraved in the bell. If you have any old flags that you wish to retire, please drop them off in the front office before February 21st. Thank you!

Griffin Players Presents Boy Meets Girl

Join the Griffin Players for their winter production, Boy Meets Girl, a romp through 1930s Hollywood and a romantic comedy about the making of a romantic comedy. Performances are February 16th-17th and February 23rd-24th at 7:30PM with an additional performance at 2:30PM each Saturday. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for non-students on the payment portal HERE.

High School Winter Formal: A Night at Gatsby’s

We are excited to host the High School Winter Dance for all high school students TOMORROW, Saturday, February 10, 2024, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm in the GP Gym. The theme is Gatsby!

Tickets are $25 on the payment portal HERE until 5:00PM the day of the event. Tickets after 5:00 pm on February 10th will be $30 cash ONLY at the door.
