A Note from the Headmaster
Hello Parents, I recently came across this quote from Aristotle: “The greatest virtues are those which are most useful to other persons.” As a parent, educator, and basketball coach, I see how meaningful this quote is for children. As a coach, it has become apparent that the broader culture of sports displays for young children the ultimate goal of self-glory, personal success, and garnering the praise of man. Self-sacrifice and prioritizing the team over individual accolades does not seem to be present. There is not a spirit of humility and deference. I recently attended a Suns game and saw an opposing professional player frustrated when his coach called a time-out. It was not as if the player had an opportunity to score, but his frustration was public and by no means was he corrected for it. Why have a coach if players know best? Why have a coach if there is an attitude of frustration when you disagree with the decision? I am learning more and more how crucial it is that we as parents remind our children that it is not entirely about them. They will find more fulfillment and joy if they deny their personal desires at times for the benefit of others in the spirit of elevating the team. It is something I am certainly learning to do as a parent, educator, and coach.
