A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

A thought was posed to me that I wanted to share with you as parents. A student said, “I want to be great at everything.” This desire on the surface seems like a wonderful goal, but it was stated in the spirit of defeat, stress, and overwhelm. I was talking with this student about the difficulty in having too many goals, being stretched too thin, and that something will give…generally a healthy attitude and joy seem to dissipate when we are seeking to achieve too much.

How do we help our children as they grow in maturity to not fall into one of two extremes- work to never fail OR just give up and not care? These antinomies (what appear as contradictions while neither is good) have plagued mankind for centuries. We do not want to extinguish any spark for greatness, but we also do not want to fan a forest fire of anxiety, stress, and discontentment. Now back to the student. I did not have a solution he seemed to like but shared that I do not believe it is possible to be great at everything. Instead, I suggested to “be great in the few things that matter most.” This is where we must come in as parents to help guide our students to know and hold steadfast to what matters most. They want it all and think they can have it all (the world and popular culture tells them that), but in the end, we can only give ourselves fully to very little. Here is what I propose as a starting point for discussion- Be great at loving what is good and loving others. I will leave it you as parents to help train up your child to know how to distinguish between what is ultimately good (there are certainly lesser and greater goods) and how to truly love others.

Have a nice weekend,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Expectations for Teachers

Recently we have been receiving questions regarding response times from our teaching staff that we wish to clarify:

  1. Emails should be replied to within 24 business hours (if you email at 3:00pm on Friday, the teacher should respond by 3:00pm on Monday)
  2. Tests and quizzes should be returned within one week
  3. Essays should be returned within two weeks

If any of your child’s teachers are not adhering to these standards, please reach out to the teacher directly and if these expectations are still not being met after your initial communication, please contact Mrs. Kratz (akratz@glendaleprep.org).

Calculus Advanced Placement Test Prep- 11th/ 12th Grades

Mrs. Weaver is offering an Advanced Placement Test prep class on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:10 until 7:50, January 18 through Friday May 5.  During these classes we will focus on material and problem types that students will see on the Calculus AP test, including lots of practice on previous AP tests and concepts emphasized by the College Board.  Students will need to register for the test, which will be administered on Monday, May 8 at Scottsdale Preparatory Academy. Registration will be through Scottsdale Prep’s parent payment portal and must be complete by March 1; the cost is $136.  The cost for the class is $45 on the payment portal HERE. Special pricing for 2023 is commensurate with first-year pilot program. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Weaver at pweaver@glendaleprep.org.

Griffin Players Winter Play

Join the Griffin Players for Euripides’ Trojan Women, one of the greatest war plays of all time. Troy has fallen and the Queen Hecuba and a group of noble women await their fate. With a cast of characters familiar from Greek mythology and epics, including Poseidon and Athena, Helen and Menelaus, this play zooms in on another side of the story. Over the course of this harrowing play, we find that dignity is possible in defeat and that victory may come at as high a cost as defeat.

Performances are Friday 1/27 at 7:30pm, Saturday 1/28 at noon, Friday 2/3 at 7:30pm, and Saturday 2/4 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for everyone else and are available HERE on the payment portal. Seating for each performance is extremely limited, so get your tickets today!

String students will learn and perform a piece of orchestral repertoire, and the wind group will work on a variety of standard concert and jazz band techniques and pieces. Rehearsals will take place during weekly Lyceum. Informational meetings are being held this week, so all interested students should see Mrs. Kratz if they have not already done so. Parents, please email with any questions (akratz@glendaleprep.org).

Right Turn Traffic Issues

We have been made aware of dangerous situations happening during drop off and pickup. There have been several near-miss accidents over the past few weeks.

Some of the cars traveling southbound on 83rd Ave have been seen forming two lanes while on 83rd Ave (blocking the bike lane and other southbound traffic) to enter the parking lot. This second lane is cutting off traffic to enter using lane 2 (see map) which is the lane for traffic coming north on 83rd. This is illegal and dangerous.

Please note on the map when entering the parking lot from 83rd Ave, there are only 2 lanes.

Lane 1 is the ONLY lane for vehicles traveling south on 83rd Ave to use to enter.
Lane 2 is the ONLY lane for vehicles traveling north on 83rd Ave to use to enter.

Please also note that left turns are not allowed when exiting the parking lot before 9 am. You MUST turn right.

Thank you for being respectful and safe in the parking lot and streets around the school. If you are cutoff by a vehicle making an illegal turn into the school, and you are safely able to get a picture of the vehicle, please email the picture to Mr. Navarrette at knavarrette@glendaleprep.org.
