A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

I wanted to revisit our Thematic Goal for the Year, as I have seen its relevance over the last number of weeks. If you recall, the thematic goal is “Seek Unity- what do you desire most?”

One way we have made this goal proactive versus reactive in response to some kind of conflict is asking our teachers to strive for unity in the classroom when it comes to Academics and Character. I will use this week and next week to share with you what we have asked our teachers to do in the classroom daily. I will share first about character.

Character

  • Publicly or privately address any unkindness, whether it was in jest. Follow up with a discussion after class or at Lyceum; possible detention and referral needed depending upon the circumstances. Note side looks and gestures when another student is talking.
  • Address direct meanness/cruelty through coaching during Lyceum whereupon a referral to administrator or detention is issued (Parent email should serve as a follow up; Dean of Students copied on the email).
  • Coach and issue a detention for any repeated insubordination and/or blatant disrespect; consider referral to administration (Parent email should serve as a follow up; Dean of Students copied on the email)
    • Note
      • Hesitancy
      • Tone
      • Talking back
      • Eye roll
    • Diffuse conflict; avoid public confrontation, and follow up with the student
  • Issue a detention for side-talking/excessive talking after an individual student is told he or she must stop talking; general or group reminders should be implemented often but should not replace direct correction of a student.
  • Refer to the Dean of Students any and all cursing OR sexual innuendo OR racism.
  • Coach and possibly issue a detention for words such as “sucks”, “shut up”, “gay”, “loser”, “dumb”, “stupid”, “you are trash”, etc. In repeated cases, refer to administrator.
  • Correct students who do not ask politely or reply with gratitude to one another and to you. Do not issue a detention, but coach them to be better.

If you ever have questions or want to discuss our philosophy or principles connected to our school culture, please let me know.

Have a nice weekend,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Expectations for Teachers

Recently we have been receiving questions regarding response times from our teaching staff that we wish to clarify:

  1. Emails should be replied to within 24 business hours (if you email at 3:00pm on Friday, the teacher should respond by 3:00pm on Monday)
  2. Tests and quizzes should be returned within one week
  3. Essays should be returned within two weeks

If any of your child’s teachers are not adhering to these standards, please reach out to the teacher directly and if these expectations are still not being met after your initial communication, please contact Mrs. Kratz (akratz@glendaleprep.org).

Calculus Advanced Placement Test Prep- 11th/ 12th Grades

Mrs. Weaver is offering an Advanced Placement Test prep class on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:10 until 7:50, January 18 through Friday May 5.  During these classes we will focus on material and problem types that students will see on the Calculus AP test, including lots of practice on previous AP tests and concepts emphasized by the College Board.  Students will need to register for the test, which will be administered on Monday, May 8 at Scottsdale Preparatory Academy. Registration will be through Scottsdale Prep’s parent payment portal and must be complete by March 1; the cost is $136.  The cost for the class is $45 on the payment portal HERE. Special pricing for 2023 is commensurate with first-year pilot program. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Mrs. Weaver at pweaver@glendaleprep.org.

Griffin Players Winter Play

Join the Griffin Players for Euripides’ Trojan Women, one of the greatest war plays of all time. Troy has fallen and the Queen Hecuba and a group of noble women await their fate. With a cast of characters familiar from Greek mythology and epics, including Poseidon and Athena, Helen and Menelaus, this play zooms in on another side of the story. Over the course of this harrowing play, we find that dignity is possible in defeat and that victory may come at as high a cost as defeat.

Performances are Friday 1/27 at 7:30pm, Saturday 1/28 at noon, Friday 2/3 at 7:30pm, and Saturday 2/4 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for everyone else and are available HERE on the payment portal. Seating for each performance is extremely limited, so get your tickets today!
