A Note From Headmaster Greetings Parents,I have had the pleasure to see the fruit of our emphasis on student participation. In the last week and a half, I saw 9th students discussing Huckleberry Finn, 11th graders discussing The Odyssey, and I discussed Lord of the Flies with my 8th grade students. This expectation of student participation may be uncommon in today’s schools. Who would think that students could discuss among themselves a fictional work for thirty, forty-five, sixty minutes? Who would think that young people could actively engage one question while examining a text, ancient or more modern, for meaning?Participation can be difficult for many students because it requires interpretation, vulnerability, and humility. Students must consider a question, comprehend a rich text, and formulate an idea while also providing justification. And that is not all. Then, students must meet the expectation to share their idea with peers in a thoughtful and coherent way. For example, in my 8th grade class, we considered the question after completing chapter 3 of Lord of the Flies– What do the boys need? I witnessed thirteen and fourteen year-old-students do the following for thirty minutes- sharing ideas, asking each other questions, encouraging one another to share, noting passages in the text, and investing in the truth of what these boys need most after becoming stranded on an island with no adults. It was beautiful to see students passionate about a setting, conflict, and characters that do not even exist; it is a fictional story. Why such passion and interest? Because these stories connect with human nature- we all have beliefs regarding good and evil, human interaction, and considering how to respond to trials and suffering. I again invite you to consider sitting in on a class to see for yourself this kind of participation. Please consider signing up for Coffee with the Headmaster via the website to share some time with other parents, as well as visiting classes. I close with asking you to consider the sacrifice of both our former veterans and current servicemen and servicewomen. We are blessed to live in the United States and have freedom and security. Join me in thanking those in our GP community for their service. Enjoy spending time together as a family on Veteran’s Day.
