A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Families,

We had field day this week! It was so exciting to see the students decked out in House colors, competing together for the ultimate prize- The House Cup!!! The 2022 Fall Field Day victor was House Lutra!

On Thursday, we had our Blazer Ceremony. The students were attentive as they listened to Mr. Fuller present on maturity and the joy that can come with learning to be aware and finding friends who will push us to seek good. Seniors presented ties to sophomores, and every one of our fifty-eight Juniors received the blazer and are wearing it proudly. These are special traditions at GP, and I was blessed to celebrate the growth and excellence of our upperclassmen. Here are some pictures of the event:

Updated Tutoring Schedule

The tutoring schedule has been updated for quarter two. Please click HERE [1] to see the latest version and use it to help your student plan a successful quarter.

St. Mary’s Food Bank- House Competition!

The Community Service Committee is hosting a food drive beginning November 7th and running through November 21st, 2022. To make things interesting and to provide a little incentive, we are making this a little competition among House groups! There will be four collection boxes decorated according to house colors. Bring and deposit your non-perishable food items into your house box and let’s see which House shows the most charitable spirit for St. Mary’s Food Bank!!

High School Epic Cycle

High School students are invited to join us Friday, November 18th-19th for our overnight Epic Cycle! Doors open Friday at 6:00 PM and close at 6:30 PM There will be a campfire reading of The Iliad, plus snacks, games, and skits. The cost for this event is $15 before November 11th and $20 thereafter. Register HERE [2] on the payment portal! Parents of latecomers or students who have not paid on the portal must sign a permission form at the door.

Night of the Event: 

-Students must check-in at the gym lobby. Phones must be checked-in upon arrival. Phones may be used to contact parents, if desired.

-Comfortable warm clothing such as pajamas or onesies may be worn. Clothing must be school appropriate (no spaghetti straps, sleeveless shirts, leggings, tight pants, yoga pants, inappropriate wording on clothing, or short shorts). Students who dress inappropriately will need to call home to receive appropriate attire or leave the event.

-Students are invited to bring cardboard and tape to create fake swords and shields for skits.

-Students may bring cards, board games, or other non-electronic games.

-Students may bring blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, or sleeping pads.             .

-Students with dietary restrictions should bring their own snacks. We will provide snacks, but we will not be accommodating special requests. No energy drinks allowed.

-All students must be picked up by 7:00 AM on Saturday, November 19th.

-Students will be required to stay the night unless parents contact to arrange special provisions.

Senior Trip Fundraising Opportunity

Seniors have available to them a fundraising opportunity with Tyr Tactical. Seniors may work in four-hour shifts for the following dates and earn $25 an hour to apply to their Senior Trip balance. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, students must sign a waiver [3]. Please click here [4] to sign up for the November sessions. The dates available to earn money are:

Griffin Players Present Once Upon a Mattress

Join the Griffin Players for the fall musical, Once Upon a Mattress; it is The Princess and the Pea like you have never seen it before! In a kingdom long ago and far away, Prince Dauntless is having a hard time finding the perfect marriage partner. The search is made more difficult by his mother’s exacting standards and impossible tests. Enter Princess Winnifred! Come enjoy a medieval romp complete with singing, dancing, and magic tricks with our talented cast of students and faculty. Performances will be at the Maryvale Prep theatre, 4825 W Camelback Road, Phoenix AZ, 85031 and will take place TODAY, Friday November 4th at 7:30pm and TOMORROW, Saturday November 5th at 2:30pm and 7:30pm. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for everyone else HERE [5]on the payment portal and at the door.

Winter Concert

Remember that the Prep School Winter Concerts are on the evening of Wednesday, December 7th at Haven Church in Glendale (5902 W Cactus Rd, Glendale, AZ 85304). All grade 7, 8, 9, and 10 students in Music class are required to perform that evening, and will be joined by all of our extracurricular choirs (Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Bella Voce, Men’s Choir, and Middle School Choir). If your students are participating in the concert, they will receive detailed information from their teacher/director about the concert, but we also encourage all students and families to come to hear these fine performers share their musical gifts with you.

There are two separate concerts on December 7th. The Middle School concert begins at 5:30 pm and the High School concert begins at 7:00 pm. Students must provide their own transportation the evening of the concert. Middle School performers must arrive at the church by 4:30 pm to warm-up and get into position. High school students must arrive at the church by 5:55 pm.

Rehearsal for the concert will take place during the school day on Tuesday, December 6th. Students will be transported to and from Glendale Prep by bus for the rehearsal at Haven Church.

NOTE: Students in the extracurricular choirs may be given specific dress instructions that differ from the following guidelines.

Concert attire for MIDDLE-school boys is Black and White, as follows:

-White long-sleeved collared dress shirt and black dress slacks
-Long black necktie (bowties are not allowed)
-Black belt, black socks, and dress shoes (sneakers are not dress shoes)
No denim, external pockets, patterned tops, or any other deviation from the concert attire allowed.

Concert attire for MIDDLE-school girls is Black and White, as follows:

-A white blouse with solid black dress slacks or black skirt. If a girl would like to wear a black dress, she must cover the top of the dress with a white blouse or white cardigan so that the look is consistent with the uniform of a white blouse with black skirt/pants. Sleeves for blouses or dresses must be cap-sleeve or longer, and skirts or dresses must not be shorter than the knee.
-Black dress shoes (Open-toed dress shoes are permitted, but flip-flops, sneakers, or boots are not allowed.) Heels of any kind must be very low.
-Solid black tights beneath skirts are permitted. Leggings or yoga pants are not a substitute for dress slacks.
-Nail polish and make-up must follow dress code guidelines.
No denim, external pockets on pants, patterned tops, or any other deviation from the concert attire code allowed.

Concert attire for HIGH-school students:

Concert attire for high school is ALL BLACK for both boys and girls, as follows:

BOYS will wear black long-sleeved collared dress shirts with black slacks, black belt, black dress shoes, and no tie. Sneakers are not dress shoes.

GIRLS will wear a black dress, or a black blouse with black skirt or black dress slacks, and black dress shoes (open-toed dress shoes are permitted, but flip-flops, sneakers, or boots will not be allowed). Heels of any kind must be very low.

Ladies’ concert clothing and make-up must follow the dress code in the family handbook.

Attire must be professional, modest, and follow Glendale Prep dress code guidelines.

SENIOR FAMILIES: If you missed the FAFSA Workshop on campus this past week, ASU is hosting a virtual FAFSA Workshop on Thursday, November 17 at 6:00pm. Please use this LINK [7] to register your attendance.

JUNIORS: The next session of College 101 will take place on Tuesday, November 8 during Calculus class. Please refer to the handout you received as a reminder of what to bring.

Athletics

Fall Sports Awards Ceremony Please join us in celebrating our student-athletes for their contributions and successes in the Fall Season. The Fall Awards Ceremony will be on Tuesday, November 22nd. The middle school ceremony will begin at 5PM and the high school ceremony will begin at 6:30PM. In keeping with tradition, students should dress for the occasion. Gentlemen should wear slacks, a belt, and tuck in their shirts. Jackets and ties are recommended but not required. Ladies should ensure the fit and length of dresses and skirts are consistent with our school’s expectations at dances. All skirts and dresses should be no shorter than mid-thigh; no spaghetti straps or cut outs. We are asking that middle school student-athletes and parents depart by 6:25PM. We will have light refreshments after each ceremony. GO GRIFFINS!
