A Note From the Headmaster

Greetings Parents,

For my very first headmaster note, I wanted to share a quote from my favorite book, The Chosen. We read this book in 8th grade Literature and Composition and it is certainly a must-read for all parents. It tells the story of two boys coming of age and forming a friendship during World War II. There is this powerful moment where a father seeks to teach his son about the meaning, purpose, and significance of a person’s life, even in a world full of suffering. He presses his son to consider this: a blink of an eye in itself is nothing; but the eye that blinks, that is something. A span of life is nothing; but the man who lives the span, he is something. He can fill that tiny span with meaning, so its quality is immeasurable though its quantity may be insignificant. A man must fill his life with meaning, meaning is not automatically given to life. It is hard work to fill one’s life with meaning- that, I do not think you understand yet. A life filled with meaning is worthy of rest. I am so blessed and honored to be headmaster of Glendale Prep. Our community is so special because of our outstanding teachers, supportive parents, and wonderful students. I truly believe our service to your children is vital because it provides an environment for them to wonder about truth and meaning in the midst of life’s challenges and hardships. Our goal is not merely to teach facts and various skills; so much of the work our teachers do every day transcends the curriculum and is really about human relationships. Glendale Prep is an excellent school, but more importantly, we are a caring community. My hope and prayer is that our students feel known and loved each and every day and that they will indeed work to find meaning and significance to their lives as they grow to become life-long learners as well as form life-long friendships.

Thank you for your continued support and care for our community.

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Traffic Reminders
Parents, we need to be conscientious of the neighborhoods in our community. Please remember that you can only wait to pick up students on the north side of the park on Pinnacle Peak, east of 83rd Avenue. You may not wait on the east or south side of the park. Thank you for your cooperation.

Winter Sports Meeting
There will be a Winter Sports Information meeting on Tuesday, October 16th at 6:30 p.m. for athletes and parents in the Gymnasium. This is a time to hear about our sports programs and meet the coaches. High School practices (Basketball and Soccer) begin on Monday, October 29th and Middle School practices (Baseball, Softball, & Soccer) begin on Tuesday, October 30th.

You will need to have the following items prior to the first day of practice to be able to participate:

  • Physical Parts A, B, and C & Parent Consent Form filled out and turned in
  • Pay the Athletic Fee
  • Take and complete the Brainbook online course (high school only)

PSO Restaurant Night
Join GP families as we get together for Restaurant Night on Thursday, October 18th at Fired Pie on 75th Avenue just north of Loop 101 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Show the paper flyer or the flyer from your smartphone [15] when you check out. Invite your family and friends; all proceeds go toward the Senior Trip.

Fall Sports Pictures
Fall Sports Pictures and uniform turn-in (for athletes who have finished their season) will be Monday, October 22nd after school. End times for each sport will vary. If you have any questions please contact Athletic Director, Mr. Drake, at sdrake@glendaleprep.org [11].

PSAT (9th-11th Grade)
Each fall, Glendale Preparatory Academy provides all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors the opportunity to take the PSAT test, which is a predictor test for the SAT. For juniors, it is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship competition. Although only scores from the junior year are considered for the National Merit Scholarship competition, we also offer it for sophomores and freshmen. Taking the PSAT is a good opportunity for students to become familiar with both the PSAT and the SAT. This year the PSAT test will be administered on Wednesday, October 24th at 8:00 am and will conclude around 12:00 p.m.

Please ensure your student: (1) gets a good night’s sleep, (2) eats a nourishing breakfast, (3) brings a small snack, (4) arrives at school on time, and (5) has no appointments scheduled before noon.  Additionally, please have him/her bring: (1) extra sharpened #2 pencils and (2) a calculator.

Today your student was sent home with a packet that must be completed and brought back to school on Monday, October 15th. Please ensure your student completes the information requested and places it in his/her backpack so that he/she has it upon their return after the break. The information will help expedite the pre-test administration process.

GP Ties
Last chance to order a Glendale Prep tie for the student Blazer Ceremony. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are granted the privilege of wearing a tie as a part of their school uniform. Sophomores will receive their ties when blazers are distributed to the upperclassmen.

College Counseling
All Great Hearts juniors and parents of juniors are encouraged to attend the 11th Annual Great Hearts College Symposium on Saturday, Oct. 20th. This year, the event will be hosted by Scottsdale Preparatory Academy. We hope to see you there!
