A Note from the Headmaster
Hello Parents, It was an exciting and unique first week back. The weather was a bit chilly, we had a half day on a Tuesday (another half day Tuesday next week), and enjoyed our high school Symposium. I wanted to share some insights from the panel of teachers as they discussed Frankenstein this past Monday. One perspective that stood out to me was an answer Ms. Valentine proposed to the question- “Who is really the monster”? Her answer was that to be a monster is to use our nature as humans, our rationality, to justify wickedness or evil. We, as readers, can use our rationality to justify Victor abandoning his creation upon seeing its hideousness, despite its obvious innocence and need for love; or we, as the readers, can justify the creature’s path of revenge because he has been so mistreated. I like this way of identifying what it is to become a monster- using one’s rationality (what makes you human) to justify your own evil. One character in the story is an old blind man to whom the creature speaks. The creature shares his loneliness and misery, asking this blind man to inspire some degree of hope for companionship and friendship. The old man seeks to encourage the creature (not seeing his hideous face and over-sized proportions but speaking to him as a fellow human) by saying, “Do not despair. To be friendless is indeed to be unfortunate; but the hearts of men, when unprejudiced by any obvious self-interest, are full of brotherly love and charity. Rely, therefore on your hopes; and if these friends are good and amiable, do not despair.” Let us remind our children to consider others; may they not be blinded by their own self-interest but truly see and love others.
